ROLE of the POSITION

Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor I and/or Associate Director for Student Union Facilities & Operations, the Custodial Worker II performs general cleaning services to the facility using various cleaning equipment and materials in order to provide a safe, hygienic, and orderly work environment for all users.  Tasks include cleaning public and offices areas, restroom sanitization, trash removal, floor care, window washing, polishing furniture, storage room organization, light maintenance, and other duties as assigned by supervisor.  The process of completing these tasks may include, but are not limited to, the use of various equipment including electric strippers, buffers, vacuums, extractors and rider scrubber machines.  Knowledge of appropriate use of a wide variety of cleaning agents and materials is highly preferred.  Custodial staff have the responsibility of ensuring safety and security in the facility while carrying out their normal, daily duties.  This may include ensuring windows, doors, and/or access ways are properly secured and, where appropriate, locking doors, windows, and/or gates, arming security systems and reporting security deficiencies to a supervisor.  Light maintenance/repair work may include replacing light bulbs, changing equipment belts, bags, and/or cleaning decks, reporting broken and/or malfunctioning equipment to supervisor and requesting cleaning supplies as needed.  The ability and willingness to move furniture and assist in setting up rooms for meetings and special event is required. Additional duties include reaching for and maintaining building standards that meet APPA standards.

Areas of responsibilities include: meeting rooms, offices, hallways, closets/storage rooms, stairways, entrances/exits, dining area, studying/gathering areas, lounges, the Theater, the SORCE Room, the Scarlet & Grey Free Press Offices, the SIA and SLL Offices, CSUN Offices, Information Technology Offices, the Computer Lab, the Rebel Card Offices, Rebel Copy Send work space, and the Intersection work space.  Limited cleanliness responsibilities will be applied to some food retail outlets including Starbucks, Jamba, and the POD Convenience Store.

Additional areas of responsibilities include: immediate exterior areas (that are not food service or Campus Grounds) of the Student Union including trash/waste bins, sidewalks, stairways, cart parking, PIDA Plaza, the Courtyard, the East Entrance steps and walkways and the loading dock area.

The Custodial Worker II must maintain a positive attitude when communicating with colleagues, customers/guests and staff team members; Must be able to help promote a positive work environment for increased staff morale; Must be able to adapt and be flexible during transition and in a dynamic work environment; Participate, when requested by the Assistant Director for Facilities, in special assignments, training, and/or events/meetings as related to the position; Complete, when requested by the Associate Director for Facilities, items by the end of the shift or as soon as possible, or after the request is made, within reason.

The typical workweek for this position is:

Wednesday through Saturday 4 PM to 2:30 AM

Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday Off

The Custodial Worker II will, from time to time, be required to work outside their standard work schedule including special events, holidays, weekends, late evenings, and/or early mornings as determined by the Associate Director for Student Union Facilities and Operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of custodial or janitorial experience in a commercial, industrial, hospital, governmental or similar environment; OR six months of general work experience and one year of custodial or janitorial experience in a commercial, industrial, hospital, governmental or similar environment; OR six months of experience as a Custodial Worker I in Nevada State service OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of building maintaining equipment (floor machines, riders, lifts, extractors, etc.)
  • Knowledge of "Green" or sustainability cleaning products and practices
  • Willingness to want to learn more, know more and do more within the Student Union department

SALARY

Grade 23 Step 1, salary 36,540.00. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
