Job Summary / Basic Function
Cleaning of buildings and surrounding grounds (includes daily cleaning of classrooms, restrooms; mopping, vacuuming and trash removal) lift, move and operate cleaning equipment; move heavy furniture and other items; order/stock cleaning supplies; use of custodial supplies.
Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Custodial Worker 1 has the responsibility of cleaning a building or a particular area of the building(s).
  • Performs Custodial duties, including but not limited to the following:
    • Dust mops, wet mops, buffs, strips, waxes floors.
    • Vacuums and shampoos carpeting.
    • Washes windows.
    • Dusts and washes furniture.
    • Washes blackboards.
    • Changes light bulbs from a reasonable height.
    • Empties wastebaskets, carries all wastes to pick-up area.
    • Cleans and disinfects bathrooms, including mirrors, hand bowls, toilets, walls, showers and floors. Replenishes bathroom supplies.
    • Shovels snow from immediate entrances.
    • Collects and disposes of debris around building.
  • Reports needed repairs in his/her area to immediate supervisors.
  • Keeps a stock of cleaning supplies by placing order with immediate supervisors.

  • The available shifts for this posting include Monday to Friday 7am to 3pm and Thursday to Monday 7am to 3pm.
    Minimum of Education / TrainingRequired Education Summary
    • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Sufficient physical strength in order to perform custodial tasks.
    • Ability to learn the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
    • Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces.
    • Successful candidates must communicate well, be able to read and understand chemical labels, and will be required to successfully complete an interview.
    Preferred Qualifications
    High school diploma or GED.
    Previous custodial experience preferred.
    Physical Demands
    Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to shoulder height (1/3 of the time). Must be able to carry up to 100 lbs., via team lift, (1/3 of the time). Must be able to push/pull up to 50 lbs. (1/3 of the time). Additional requirements include: Bending, Twisting, Kneeling, Squatting, Crawling, Reaching out and up, Wrist-Turning, Grasping, Pinching and Finger Manipulation (1/3 to 2/3 of the time).
