The Facilities Management Team is an integral element of the Business Services and Organizational Excellence team and serves to create, maintain, and continuously improve the William & Mary physical environment to enable excellence in teaching, research, and public service.
Position Summary
The Custodial Supervisor is charged with supervising the daily work activities of custodial workers and building support workers. The position fosters and promotes teamwork, professional development, and customer service and ensures a clean, safe, healthy environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Hours are generally 7:00AM-4:00PM, Monday through Friday. During some times of the year, this supervisor will be required to work additional hours, or work on weekends. This supervisor will also be required to be on the rotating on-call.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Plan, coordinate, schedule, assign, inspect, and oversee custodial operations inside and outside academic, auxiliary, athletic, administrative and/or residential facilities.
  • Direct the daily activities of custodial workers and building support workers to cover vacancies, provide continuous delivery of services, and ensure equitable distribution of work.
  • Respond promptly to tenant needs and requests; resolve problems quickly and effectively. Report and respond to emergency calls for assistance.
  • Responsible for the orderliness and cleanliness of assigned housekeeping closets and equipment storage areas.
  • Demonstrate, verify and ensure proper use and maintenance of equipment.
Conditions of Employment
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
  • This position may work a non-traditional schedule, typically weekends, and holidays.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and availability to accommodate special events, emergencies, and/or unscheduled work assignments, which typically include working weekends, and holidays.
  • Position is required to participate in the Facilities Management on-call program. Subject to the 24-hour callback for emergencies.
  • This position has been designated as essential and may require reporting to work when the University is officially closed.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license during employment.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete Van Safety Training within the first ninety (90) days of employment, subject to availability. Comply with the University’s Vehicle Use Policy.

Required Qualifications
EDUCATION/LICENSE:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience.

COMPETENCIES:
  • Knowledge of commercial cleaning practices, including floor and carpet care, cleaning products, and equipment, with the ability to work with and properly use or learn to use cleaning chemicals and agents, including dilution and dispensing systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory principles and conflict resolution, with the ability to evaluate performance and manage the work of others.
  • Basic knowledge of computer applications particularly MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook – email).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to read, write, speak, and understand English to effectively communicate and understand others, and to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time; lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs; tolerate frequent bending, stooping, and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required during specific work duties as determined by the department.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated custodial experience.
  • Experience in training and overseeing the work of others.
Preferred Qualifications
EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook (email).
  • Experience working as a Custodial supervisor is highly desirable.
  • Experience in performance management, goal setting, and mentoring of staff is desirable.
