This is a 2nd shift working custodial shift leader position reporting to a Custodial Section Supervisor. Responsible for assisting the Custodial Section Supervisor in transferring work assignments and information between shift employees, as well as overseeing the execution of those assignments. Also assists the Custodial Section Supervisor in training staff and inspecting work areas. Coordinates labor and custodial support to ensure customer requests are met and cleaning standards are maintained. Primary responsibilities include proper use of custodial materials, supplies and equipment in performing custodial and housekeeping services.

Job Duties:
● Coordinates, assigns, and oversees the work of custodians on various shifts. Oversees the completion of custodial work assignments including inspecting work areas. Coordinates labor and custodial support to ensure customer requests are met and cleaning standards are maintained. Provides input to Custodial Section Supervisor on areas needing improvement and recommended coaching for custodial staff not performing to standards.
● Stores, mixes, transports, applies, uses and disposes of various custodial cleaning materials and supplies in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS), the Hazard Communication Program and manufacturer instructions. Conducts recurring training for safety, material safety data sheets (MSDS), hazardous communication, winter and summer safety, and equipment and supply use/operation. Recommends training topics to supervisor and assists in conducting training.
● Uses judgment and makes independent decisions regarding daily work activities. Negotiates changes and resolves conflict as required.
● Communicates and relays information and requests from Custodial Section Supervisor to custodial staff. Communicates effectively with students, visitors, contractors, vendors and other University staffs, through the use of a computer, notes, discussions, meetings, and telephone calls.
● Works as a team member with others in providing custodial, housekeeping and other general labor services throughout campus. Cleans, spot cleans, mops, dusts, vacuums, washes, scrubs, strips, polishes, buffs all interior and exterior building surfaces to include, but not be limited to the following: walls, floors, ceilings, light fixtures, furniture, appliances, equipment, radiators, pipes, cigarette urns and ash trays, shelves, chairs, glass surfaces, metal surfaces, wood surfaces, blackboards, showers, laundry rooms, supply rooms, bathrooms, locker rooms and similar surfaces.
● Performs housekeeping services to include stripping and making beds, restocking paper products, restocking of soap dispensers, removal of trash and recycling materials, and connecting and disconnecting room telephones.
● Performs minor facility repair and preventive maintenance tasks, and reports necessary repairs, damages, charge back damages and maintenance requirements.
● Immediately reports accidents, injuries, security violations, stolen or missing items, and safety hazards and conditions to an available supervisor. Checks fire extinguishers, fire alarms and emergency lights as required.
● Responsible for the proper safekeeping of master keys. Opens and locks doors as required.
● Stocks and maintains custodial supply closets, rooms, and lockers.
● Performs outside custodial services around buildings to include but not limited to: cleaning stairs, landings, sidewalks, pavements, windows, window wells, mats, light fixtures, drains, trash and litter pickup around buildings and snow and ice removal.
● Augments outside labor crews by performing routine maintenance of grounds and plant beds (weeding, trimming, raking, tilling, mulching, etc.)
● Adheres to OSHA standards, employs safe practices, and follows safety policies/procedures. Uses PPE in a safe manner, sets examples for others, notifies supervisor of potential hazards, and demonstrates good housekeeping habits.
● Supports and promotes the University’s sustainability efforts.
● Performs other duties as assigned in support of University operations and special events.

Assigned full time to the Langone Center, this custodial position serves as the Facilities representative after traditional work hours (Monday through Friday and on weekends) to manage and respond to requests from campus constituents and Public Safety that may be outside of the traditional duties and responsibilities of a custodian (off-shift "callouts"). Examples include but are not limited to addressing plumbing issues (unclogging toilets, securing leaking fixtures, and cleaning up water); cleaning up broken glass, vomit, and blood; capturing rodents and bats; salting icy walkways; and locating and resetting breakers. Will require navigating interruptions; prioritizing call-out requests against the regular workload; communicating and working with colleagues and/or leaders across campus; timely response and resolution; and appropriate follow up/reporting on campus wide call-out activity to facilities leadership as instructed.

Minimum Qualifications:
● 2 years of recent custodial or housekeeping experience
● A high school diploma or equivalent
● Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written instructions required.
● Customer service oriented attitude.
● Detail oriented and demonstrated ability to take initiative.
● Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as effectively part of a team.
● Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.
● Experience operating and training others on the proper use of a variety of custodial manual and motor driven tools and equipment.
● Demonstrated willingness to learn and use University’s ERP systems, email and the work order/facility maintenance software system.

Other Requirements:
● This staff position is classified as part of essential services. This individual is required to report to work even if campus has a delayed opening, early closing, or is closed, unless instructed otherwise by a supervisor or when the individual has concerns related to their personal safety.
● Post offer drug screening will be conducted.
● ACT 153 background checks will be conducted.

Physical Demands:
● Bends, kneels, stoops, pushes, pulls, reaches above and below shoulders, lifts and carries objects up to 25 pounds unassisted; assists others in moving objects greater than 25 pounds as needed; climbs and works on stools, ladders, stairs and elevated platforms with training and safety equipment. Must use proper safety equipment for hearing, head, eye, feet, hand and body protection as required.
● Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 25 pounds.
● Daily exposure to dust, dirt, cleaning detergents and chemicals, odors, body fluids and waste, weather and temperature changes.


Work Type:
This is a full-time, year round, benefits eligible position.

This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.

Salary Range:
This is a Staff Non-exempt position with a hiring range of $16-20 (NE07). The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
