Department Summary

The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology is the University of Oregon's outpost at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. It provides opportunities for both the undergraduate and graduate education, and for research. The 130-acre complex includes six professors, staff, students, research and teaching laboratories, administrative offices, library, housing, cafeteria, meeting facilities, boat dock, boats, a museum/aquarium and a large nature preserve.


Position Summary

The Custodial Service Coordinator maintains clean, safe and sanitary conditions in all buildings on the OIMB campus. This position is responsible for planning and coordinating custodial work, keeping inventory and coordinating laundry services, making minor repairs and securing buildings. This position will perform general cleaning and floor care directly. The person in this position must be able to prioritize tasks to meet the demands of a service-oriented environment with frequent interruptions and changes in schedule.

This position will oversee and coordinate the work of temporary employees and assure that staffing needs are met during large events and seasonal needs, such as student term housing turnover. They will train temporary custodial workers to correctly operate equipment and to properly use cleaning chemicals.

The person in this position will coordinate with the Facilities Manager to help with moving and arranging furniture for classes and events. They will coordinate and schedule with the administration office to ensure units, auditorium, dining facilities and classrooms are cleaned and prepared for visitors. This position works with staff, faculty, students and guests and reports to the Facilities Manager.

Work Conditions
This position requires the ability to work with germicidal, sanitizing, and other cleaning products. It requires the ability to walk extensively in and out of doors, climb stairs, reach, lift and move heavy objects, stoop, perform repetitive movements and work on ladders. Careful cleaning is required in lab environments.

Work Schedule:
This position works a flexible work schedule which may vary depending on the time of year and campus needs. Occasional weekend work may be required. Standard hours are 7:00 - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.

Special Requirements
• Position will require a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain UO Driver's Certification
• Finalist is subject to successful completion of physical exam and Essential Function Test (location UO, Eugene, Oregon)


Minimum Requirements

• Two years of experience in custodial services work

• Ability to follow directions, maintain acceptable work habits, punctuality and regularity of attendance
• Strong attention to detail
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to represent the university in a positive manner to other employees, students, visitors and the community
• Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
• Ability to use a computer for emailing, ordering, following schedule and maintaining cleaning records


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cleaning techniques and chemicals used in specific custodial work
• Custodial experience working in a hotel, school, nursing home or hospital setting
• Custodial experience in floor care, operating a carpet cleaning machine and a stripping and
waxing machine
• Experience organizing and prioritizing daily schedule
• Experience supervising the work of other custodians
