Position Summary
The Custodial Lead Worker provides a clean, safe, healthy environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Lead Worker position will assist supervisors with the coordination, assignment, and inspection of work activities performed by custodial and building support workers.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Clean, dust, and wipe fixtures, furniture, floors, surfaces, walls, and windows. Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors. Strip, clean, buff and apply floor cleaners, sealers, and finishes to hard surface floors. Vacuum, spot clean, and extract carpets.
  • As assigned, oversee and inspect the work of a group of custodial workers and/or building support workers. Ensure tasks are performed and completed according to established schedules.
  • Assist supervisor with ongoing equipment, chemical, and process training of custodial workers and building support workers.
  • Respond to tenant needs and requests. Report building damage or the need for building repairs. Report and respond to emergency calls for custodial assistance.
  • Work outside to remove snow, ice, and debris from entrances, steps, and sidewalks using various tools and products—clean exterior windows as directed.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position is non-exempt and eligible to receive overtime in accordance with Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This position is subject to overtime (both scheduled and unscheduled).
  • This position may work a non-traditional schedule, typically weekends and holidays.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and availability to accommodate special events, emergencies, and/or unscheduled work assignments, which typically include working weekends, and holidays.
  • This position has been designated as essential and may require reporting to work when the university is officially closed.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • This position requires successful completion of Van Safety Training within the first ninety days of employment, subject to availability. Compliance is required with the university’s Vehicle Use Policy.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Driver’s license.
  • Experience working in a custodial position.
  • Knowledge of cleaning agents, with the ability to use or learn to use cleaning chemicals and agents, including dilution and dispensing systems.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to read, write, and effectively communicate with others and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Familiarity with powered and non-power cleaning tools, with the ability to operate powered and non-powered cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, and tolerate frequent bending, stooping, and climbing stairs. Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees.
  • Personal protective equipment will be required during specific work duties as determined by the department.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of commercial cleaning practices, including floor and carpet care. Commercial cleaning experience is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of computers, with basic proficiency in a variety of applications and or systems.
  • Ability to coordinate and oversee the work of others.
  • Experience in training and overseeing the work of others.
