About the Department
The Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research serves as a meeting place for the people and ideas furthering more equitable community college outcomes. Working with educators, researchers, policymakers and other key stakeholders from across North Carolina and the country, we distill knowledge into actionable insights, create opportunities for collaboration, and equip community college leaders to tackle their most pressing issues.
Essential Job Duties
We are seeking an action-oriented staff member who can co-lead the development of high-quality, engaging instructional materials to be delivered through the Presidents Academy, Aspiring Presidents Institute, Rural College Leaders Program and professional learning opportunities with community college leaders and their teams.
We are looking for someone who understands adult learning and thinks deeply and creatively about ways to engage groups in highly effective activities that are aligned to clearly defined learning objectives. The individual in this position will collaborate with the other members of the Belk Center team and partners in the field to create curricular resources (including agendas, slide decks, facilitation guides, and participant tools). This individual will also play a role in supporting the delivery of curriculum across engagements.
  • Translate community college leadership research and principles into high-quality in-person and virtual instructional content for our leadership curriculum delivery, including curricular modules, case studies, activities, and assignments.
  • Customize and tailor existing curricular materials for different settings and audiences with varying levels of experience.
  • From ideation to delivery, develop new curricular content on emerging leadership topics in the field by collaborating with colleagues across the Belk Center on research such as conducting interviews and synthesizing artifacts from colleges, including documents and data reports, and leveraging and maintaining relationships with subject matter experts within the field.
  • Serve as a collaborator and thought partner in the design of programs and convenings.
  • Some travel, nights, and weekends required.
  • This position reports to the Deputy Director

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree plus three years of experience in instructional design or related field; demonstrated skill and creativity in instructional design and curriculum development for adult learners. 

Note: we welcome candidates from higher education backgrounds as well as those who have proven experience developing high-quality instructional programming for organizational/industry training, professional development programs, K-12 teacher training programs, non-traditional postsecondary education institutions, or other settings serving adult learners.

  • Strong commitment to improving postsecondary outcomes, particularly for students served by community colleges, and a belief that student outcomes can be improved by supporting leadership development and transformational organizational change.
  • Strong project management skills and initiative: Candidates should be detail-oriented and resolute about following through, with the ability to independently produce high quality products, lead projects, and work collaboratively.
  • Demonstrates adaptability and resilience; comfort working under tight deadlines and with integrating feedback from multiple stakeholders.
  • A demonstrated talent for clear, effective, and persuasive writing; the skill to tailor writing style and voice to target different audiences; and an ability to communicate data and complex ideas simply and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and analyze data, identifying insights and implications and applying them to work products.
  • Ability to use effective and varied communication with a range of stakeholders; able to develop and maintain strong external relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work on a team.
