Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Cultural Resources Director, assists with research, monitoring, reporting, and other needs associated with the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural resources. Maintains professionalism in all interactions with internal and external customers. Honors and represents the mission, vision, values of CIT and the Cultural Resources department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conducts initial background research on potential ground disturbing projects; requests and analyzes information from diverse sources (e.g., State Environmental Policy Act checklists, site maps, cultural resource and archaeological surveys, geotechnical, wetland, and fish reports); provides input on projects' potential impacts to cultural resources.
  • Contributes to ethnographic research, archival and genealogical studies, and information requests from Tribal members.
  • Researches Tribal history and prehistory of southwest Washington and northern Oregon; composes and analyzes findings.
  • Assists in the editing of outgoing documents for cultural context, elements of correct and respectful protocol, and protection of current and future cultural resource concerns.
  • Assists with Natural Resources Department projects as needed.
  • Assists with archaeological monitoring and site visits as needed.
  • Creates and maintains an effective filing and retrieval system for permit applications and other documentation.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, Tribal members and administrators, state and federal governments, contractors, public officials, and the general public.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and presents a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of traditional form of government and Tribal customs and traditions.
  • Knowledge of Tribal policy, procedures, and programs.
  • Knowledge of Tribal governments, Cowlitz Tribal history, and Cowlitz ethnographic landscape.
  • Knowledge of records management.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Tribal customs and beliefs.
  • Ability to operate various word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software programs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to prepare administrative paperwork.
  • Ability to use good judgment, analyze, and solve problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of sensitivity to community issues and concerns.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • One year experience preferred with Tribal consultation, history, cultural preservation, or related field.
  • A combination of relevant education and related work experience may be considered.
  • Valid driver's license is required when driving vehicles for work-related purposes.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background screening / investigation according to the established requirements below.

Tribal preference in accordance with Cowlitz Indian Tribe Code and CIT Employee Policies and Procedures Handbook shall apply to all positions. All positions are required to adhere to CIT's established safety policies regarding vaccine requirements and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Background Investigation Requirements:

  • Pre-employment drug screen.
  • Reference checks, education and employment verification.
  • Federal, state, and/or Tribal criminal history and sanction checks including fingerprint verification.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to talk and hear, sit, walk, and stand. The employee regularly is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and to reach with arms and hands. The employee may be required to climb, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Normal visual acuity is required by this job. The position requires occasional lifting and/or carrying of up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in a typical interior/office and outdoor environment. Exposure to dust, fumes, allergens, extreme weather, and steep terrain will occur. Noise level is moderate to excessive. Standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Work is frequently performed near hazardous/moving equipment or machinery and the use of protective clothing, equipment, devices, and/or materials is necessary. Overnight travel, evening and/or weekend work is occasionally required.
