The CU Cancer Center is a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network ®, an alliance of the nation’s leading cancer centers working to establish and deliver the gold standard in cancer clinical guidelines. CU Cancer Center also is a member of the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN), a unique research partnership among North America’s top cancer centers leveraging multiple data sources and matching patients to targeted treatments. CU Cancer Center includes six institutional partners made up of approximately 300 researchers and physicians at three state universities and three healthcare delivery institutions.

The CU Cancer Center’s vision is to “prevent and conquer cancer. Together.” We do this through our mission statement of “uniting our community to overcome cancer through innovation, discovery, prevention, early detection, multidisciplinary care and education.”

The Cultural and Linguistic Competency (CLC) Coordinator will assist the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (the COE), Cancer Center members, and the community-at-large with Spanish translation, literacy adaptation, and cultural appropriateness of projects’ protocol, outreach, engagement, and research activities to ensure effective and inclusive engagement of disadvantaged Hispanic/Latino populations (e.g., monolingual, immigrant, low socioeconomic status). Transcription of interviews and translation of transcripts from Spanish to English or vice versa will fall under the CLC coordinator responsibilities. Additional responsibilities include administration of surveys, measures, and interviews to Spanish-speaking participants. The coordinator is expected to be fully bilingual (Spanish and English) to assist COE, program leaders, and investigators with the recruitment and engagement of Spanish-speaking participants.

Supervision Exercised

This position will oversee graduate and undergraduate student assistants in funded projects.

Examples of Work Performed

While this position will reside within the COE, the CLC Coordinator is expected to work closely with projects’ teams and CU Cancer Center Principal Investigators from CU’s health professions schools and colleges (e.g., Schools of Medicine Public Health, Nursing), affiliated hospitals, and community-partner organizations. The distribution of responsibilities is expected to split amongst COE projects and funded projects (e.g. Investigator-Initiated Trials, IITs) outside of the COE along with some administrative support duties.  The expected distribution of responsibilities is:


60%   Cultural, linguistic, and health literacy adaptation
  • Provide consultation on project protocols and materials to ensure these are culturally, linguistically, and literacy appropriate for underserved Latino populations
  • Adapt project protocols, consent forms, and related outreach and engagement methods and strategies to ensure cultural, linguistic, and literacy appropriateness
  • Spanish translation or interpretation of consents forms, research measures, interviews, flyers, and other documents that seek to engage underserved Latino populations
  • Modify/edit documents including consents forms, measures, interviews, flyers, etc. to ensure their cultural, linguistic, and literacy appropriateness for underserved populations
  • Transcribe and translate qualitative interviews in Spanish or English
  • Assist project leads in drafting culturally, linguistically, and literacy appropriate outreach and engagement strategies, materials, websites, and related activities
  • Other duties as assigned

30%   Project-related activities
  • Assist with accrual and enrollment of Spanish speaking participants in project activities, including obtaining participants informed consent for research projects.
  • Provide translation to assist teams to enroll and consent Spanish-speaking participants
  • Conduct one-on-one interviews and focus groups interviews, administer surveys over the phone or in person to Spanish speaking participants.
  • Adapts workflow to specific project or research study’s protocol
  • Administers related interventions and/or measures (e.g., screening tools, weblinks) to Spanish-speaking participants per project or research protocols
  • Educates Spanish-speaking patients about research participation processes

10%   Communication and Administrative Support
  • Communicates client’s plans, issues, or concerns to clinical providers and investigators
  • Communicates and educates clinical providers and investigators about participants’ cultural, linguistic, and/or health literacy background and needs
  • Assists the COE to plan and implement outreach, engagement, programs, projects, and research initiatives for Spanish-speaking populations
  • Provides administrative support on creation and maintenance of websites, social media, radio, and newsletters.
  • Provides administrative support to the COE as needed, such as participating in search committees, reviewing program portfolio, etc.
  • Collaborate with COE team to create linguistic and culturally appropriate systems of referral, recruitment, and retention of underrepresented patients to clinical trials from UCCC and partner institutions
  • Participates in clinic, research, COE, and Cancer Center meetings and initiatives
  • Attended university and community events as needed

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $48,137 - $67,391. 

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: BS or BA in translation and/or interpretation, journalism, writing, public health, health professions, social/behavioral sciences, or other related disciplines.
  • Experience: 2 or more years of working in translation/interpretation in health care settings; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in other related settings.

Substitution: Associate’s degree in a related field may substitute 2 years of a BS or BA plus 2 years of experience in translation/interpretation in addition to the minimum experience required.

Certificate

  • Certificate in Medical Translation/Interpretation (Spanish and English) is required; or completion of certificate must occur within 6 months from the date of hiring. In lieu of a certificate, an undergraduate or graduate degree in translation/interpretation is required.

Condition of Employment:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish (assessed during job interview)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in translation/interpretation, journalism, writing, health-related field (public health, nursing, social/behavioral sciences), or other relevant fields.
  • Experience with clinical research methods, including consents, protocols, surveys, etc.
  • Experience in culturally tailoring programs, materials, and activities to facilitate the inclusion of diverse population, particularly disadvantaged Latino populations (e.g., monolingual, immigrant, low SES).
  • Experience communicating health related information to participants

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish languages
  • Extensive vocabulary and grammatical knowledge of English and Spanish languages
  • Cultural literacy on Latino populations’ heritages/histories, language, social determinants of health, and religious and socio-political context
  • Knowledge of literacy and numeracy skills of disadvantaged/underserved populations
  • Knowledge adapting materials and strategies to match individual’s health literacy levels
  • Knowledge of diverse ethnically, socio-economically, and religious populations
  • Ability to provide equitable, understandable and respectful services to individuals with diverse cultural health beliefs, norms, and practices, and other communication needs
  • Knowledge of federal and university human subjects' research regulations
  • Excellent professional and presentation skills
