Department Description
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Utilities & Engineering is responsible for providing mission-critical utility services to keep the UC Davis campus running in support of the campus Academic Plan and academic program needs. Utilities provides electricity, chilled water, hot water, steam, gas, water, wastewater treatment, and drainage to more than 1,600 buildings, totaling over 12 million gross square feet of campus space.
JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction of the Superintendent, provide journey-level technical skills to operate, maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, and repair any plant, distribution system, and equipment belonging to the CHCP Unit. This includes: central heating and cooling main plant (CHCP), CNPRC Plant, TES Plant, Enology Site, and steam, chilled water, and hot water distribution systems and any other related future production/distribution systems. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of steam, and hot and chilled water production equipment, including, but not limited to boilers, chillers, heat exchangers, heat pumps, solar thermal systems, etc., and any related equipment. Perform maintenance, repairs, inspections, data collection, system monitoring, and reporting as needed on all systems. Communicate all system operational status and concerns to Superintendent.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Additional Physical Demands:
    o Use respirator and wear personal protective clothing and equipment.
    o Climb ladders, work on top of machinery and equipment, crawl, stoop, bend, and work in tight, cramped areas.
    o Lift machinery and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • This position may, at times, require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: asbestos, industrial and laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License. Participate in the DMV Pull Notice System.
  • This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services, at no charge to the applicant.
  • This position may be required to work a non-standard work schedule that may include nights, weekends, or alternative schedules such as 80 hours in 8 or 9 shifts instead of 10. Vacation usage by the employee may be restricted during peak workload periods as required to meet the needs of the campus.
  • This position supports critical campus functions operating 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. To assure adequate support of these functions the employee may be required to participate in an on-call program to facilitate timely return of staff to the campus as required to meet critical needs. This on-call program may include requirements for the employee to inform the University how they can be reached during non-working hours, to carry University provided radios, cell phones, pagers or other telecommunications equipment which would facilitate communication between the campus and employee during non-work hours, or to accept rotating on-call responsibility which could periodically restrict the off-campus movements of the employee. If the employee's non-working hour movements are restricted by the University, employees will be compensated for their 'On-Call' time according to the established on-call rates. If actually called into work, the employee will be compensated according to the established campus policies. Employees may also be required to return to work after an assigned shift due to business necessity or emergencies. Compensation for 'Call-Back' will be in accordance with campus policies. May perform work outdoors in all conditions as required to operate, maintain and repair heating and cooling systems, including at night and in inclement weather.

  • Must possess a certificate of completion from a recognized union apprenticeship program, University apprenticeship program, accredited trade school or have the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to a journey level craftsperson in the heating and cooling trade. (Non-certified applicants will have their training and experience evaluated by a Credentials Committee of Utilities Senior Managers to determine journey level status).
    Minimum Education/Experience
  • Journey level experience to operate boilers (steam and hot water), chillers, and all related equipment by using manual and computer control programs.
  • Experience maintaining, servicing, repairing, replacing, installing, and altering production equipment and distribution systems, and other campus systems related to craft.
  • Experience to complete and assess results of chemical tests of various water systems including boiler condensate, hot water system, cooling towers, chilled water, raw treated make up, and distilled water system.
    Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
  • Knowledge of boilers, steam systems, chilled water systems, hot water systems, solar thermal, heat pumps, chiller pumps and related equipment, including electrical operating controls.
  • Knowledge and skill to perform the following on various pipes: fit, welding (steel pipe), solder/silver solder (copper pipe), fabricate and install.

  • Experience and/or familiarity with plant SCADA systems.
  • Electrical and I/C experience preferred
    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
  • Ability to detect equipment performance and operational problems, by interpreting readings from meters and gauges, observing trends, etc., and take action as needed to ensure continued safe and efficient operations.
  • Ability to review technical data, mechanical and structural specifications, and apply to relevant equipment and systems.
  • Ability to use basic electrical measuring meters and knowledge of AC/DC series and parallel circuits.
  • Computer skills to operate a personal computer, navigate websites, understand proper cyber security measures, and utilize basic Microsoft Office products.
  • Skills to perform advanced analysis, anticipate problems, and operational impacts, and take action to prevent/solve problems.
  • Advanced mechanical skills to troubleshoot and repair various mechanical system components.
  • Organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide clearly written and comprehensive reports and instructions. Advanced customer service skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry codes and regulations pertaining to installation, maintenance, service, repair, alteration of CHCP equipment and distribution systems.
