Description of Work Unit
The Colorado State University (CSU) System, along with its partners, will stand up three buildings focused on water, food and agriculture, animal health, and sustainability at the new Spur campus at the National Western Center (NWC) in Denver, CO. Within the Spur buildings, CSU will conduct research and convene experts from around the globe; students of all ages will engage with science and have opportunities for exploratory learning, transforming their thinking about food, water, and health, and the careers available in these fields; and partners will join in programming the space and bring evolving content to the year-round campus. The CSU System is made up of CSU in Fort Collins, CSU Pueblo, CSU Global, and initiatives like Spur.
Position Summary
CSU Spur is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Education Team as a Virtual Education Programs Facilitator. This individual will be part of a team designing and delivering programs at the CSU Spur campus in Denver that inspire life-long learners to tackle global problems around food, water, and health, and will play a key role in the future of educational offerings at a brand-new state-of-the art campus.
The CSU Spur Virtual Education Programs Facilitator will support the CSU Spur vision and Education Team by executing the daily programmatic logistics and delivery necessary for successful virtual experiences at Spur for PreK-12 audiences, families, community partners, and general campus guests. This position is responsible for delivering educational content both in classroom program facilitation and exhibit interpretation, engaging with on site visitors, providing off-site and virtual programming, collaborating with various CSU departments to develop virtual programs, and working with and training education staff and volunteers to support the programmatic goals of the CSU Spur campus. The CSU Spur Virtual Education Programs Facilitator will spearhead and lead virtual program development and facilitation, including live and prerecorded virtual programs and virtual reality programs. The individual in this role will also support student employees, interns, and volunteers with utilizing virtual reality programming in daily programmatic engagement.
This role will have a planned weekly schedule, which may include one weekend day and some evenings. Work will occur on site at CSU Spur and may include outreach events in the community.
Program Areas of Interpretation:
  • Food: In the Terra building, education staff interpret partner programs on controlled agriculture, food systems education, urban gardening, nutrition education, and food development processes.
  • Water: In the Hydro building, work with partners like Denver Water to provide experiences around water conservation, quality, and water systems. Programming will include usage of an outdoor backyard garden space that connects to the South Platte River for riparian ecosystem programming.
  • Health: In the Vida building, the education team interprets live veterinary procedures, equine-assisted services, and equine rehabilitation therapy in partnership with the Dumb Friends League, the Temple Grandin Equine Center, and CSU Equine Sports Medicine, providing opportunities for visitors and school groups to learn about animal and human health through active observation and engagement.

The individual in this role will learn new and innovative ways to provide educational programming through virtual reality, in person hands on interactive experiences, virtual live experiences, exhibit interpretation, indoor and outdoor learning opportunities, and live interpretation of on-show surgical and animal behavior demonstrations.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree and 1 year of demonstrated experience leading educational programs, including public speaking and public demonstrations.
  • Experience working with virtual technology and ability to handle complex data and information.
  • Experience includes working with educators and children, families, and multigenerational audiences.
  • Knowledgeable in informal educational interpretative techniques and experiential learning.
  • Available to work a diverse weekly schedule, including evenings, weekdays, and weekends.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel).
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education, environmental education, family engagement, animal sciences, agriculture, or information technology.
  • Experience working with virtual reality technology.
  • Experience developing and delivering virtual programs.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience leading educational programs, including public speaking and public demonstrations.
  • Ability to facilitate programs in both Spanish and English.
  • Familiar with scientific concepts surrounding food, water, and environmental health.
  • Certified Interpretive Guide.
  • Demonstrated professional experience collaborating and working with volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and relevant ability with, culturally diverse communities in urban and rural settings.
  • Ability to establish relationships through interpersonal skills and collaboration with program stakeholders (i.e., CSU departmental staff, educators/teachers, volunteers, CSU Spur staff, etc.) to ensure the best visitor experience.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative by utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify solutions for customer or program challenges.
  • Ability to use exceptional verbal and written communication skills to prepare and present or explain information related to educational programs.
  • Passion and excitement for connecting visitors to food, water, and health.
  • Have a positive attitude and the ability to be dependable, proactive, resourceful, and flexible.

  • Lead the development and implementation of virtual reality programming for use across the CSU Spur campus with an emphasis on animal sciences, agriculture, and water.  
  • Ensure staff and volunteers can successfully implement virtual reality programming across the campus for engagement experiences. 
  • Ensure the proper use of safety practices and procedures while operating virtual reality. 
  • Clean and maintain virtual reality equipment and technology. 
  • Lead the development and implementation of virtual programs at CSU Spur, including pre-recorded educational lessons and activities and live program delivery with students via video conferencing.   
  • Work with the Education Manager and Education Coordinator to organize and manage education program systems and logistics as needed. 
  • Support development of new program offerings and educational materials as needed in collaboration with education team.   
  • Support program evaluation. 
  • Support organization of informational packets and materials for group visits and public presentations.
