The Crime Prevention Specialist is responsible for the planning, development, delivery, and management of all aspects of the University of Miami Police Department’s (UMPD) Crime Prevention Program.  Collaborates with the University community, builds positive relationships, and educates the community on crime prevention strategies and techniques. 

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                   

  • Creates and markets UMPD Crime Prevention messaging to the broader University community.

  • Maintains full knowledge of current crime activity affecting campus and the general locale to create messaging that empowers the community to take steps to prevent similar crimes on campus. 

  • Develops and presents education programs for the campus community. 

  • Develops lesson plans and teaches education programs to foster behaviors that aid in the prevention of crime, reduce fear of crime, and increase community confidence in the University’s efforts to provide a safe campus environment. 

  • Coordinates with the Office of Emergency Management where the units’ efforts intersect.  Ensures efficient and effective crime prevention programs are implemented and provides analysis and practical modifications for ongoing program success.

  • Executes compliance efforts, especially focusing on the Clery Act, Title IX, VAWA.  Produces the Clery required “Annual Security Report” w/ components for Title IX and VAWA. 

  • Coordinates with other units for data collection and verification and conducts necessary compliance activities and presentations.

  • Organizes and facilitates crime prevention meetings with internal and external parties to review crime trends and exchange best practices while developing and managing relationships and partnerships with University stakeholders to achieve targeted crime prevention outcomes. 

  • Manages the University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) website and social media platforms as a tool to communicate department activities and crime prevention related information to the campus community. 

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS              

Education:

Associate degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field; Valid driver's license

Experience:

Minimum 4 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  • Skill in collecting, organizing and analyzing data.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
