ACollege Police Officer III/Sergeant (Officially Classified as Campus PoliceOfficer III (CPOIII)) generally works as a patrol shift supervisor under thesupervision of the Chief of Police and the Captain. A Sergeant is responsiblefor supervising MassBay Police Officers, Institutional Security Officers, andcivilian staff and shall be held strictly accountable for their efficiency,discipline, appearance, and general good conduct. The Sergeant is a member ofthe supervisory team and will assume some administrative responsibilities ofthe MassBay Police Department. The Sergeant is expected to devote themselves tothe community policing mission of the MassBay Department of Public Safety.

Thisposition is considered "essential personnel" and requires you toreport for duty when requested. MassBay Community College Police Officers mustexercise clear quick thinking in emergencies and perform related work asrequired, establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others,deal tactfully with others, interact with people who are under physical and oremotional distress, follow oral and written instructions, and be willing towork nights, weekends, holidays, and report for duty at any time whenemergencies arise.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Patrol campus buildings, grounds, and properties used, owned, and leased by MassBay Community College;
  • Enforce state laws, college policies, rules and regulations;
  • Investigate crimes, accidents, complaints;
  • Provide first aid and emergency First Responder medical assistance, handle other tasks as directed;
  • Prepare concise and complete reports;
  • Direct traffics, staff post, when necessary;
  • Handle confidential and sensitive information;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Chief of Police, and superior officers.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have at least(A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in agovernmental police force or in law enforcement work and (B) of which at leastone year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalentcombination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
An Associate's degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
A Bachelor's degree or higher with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basisof the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of full time Municipal Police Academy Training certified and approved by the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) (or equivalent, as determined by the Chief of Police and MPTC/POST). Candidates MUST be a certified police officer in Massachusetts per MPTC/POST standards;
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class A, large capacity, license to carry firearm (M.G.L.c.140, section 131) without restrictions;
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License;
  • CPR/AED/First Responder certification; current and valid.

  • Demonstrated commitment to working with underserved students;
  • Thorough knowledge of modern public safety and police practices in the areas of patrol, communications and dispatching, emergency medical services, investigation, and crime prevention, with a demonstrated understanding and commitment to the principles of community policing in a diverse community and the ability to prepare written reports;
  • Experience in communication, writing, teamwork, and decision-making skills, be calm, composed, friendly, cooperative, tactful, honest, ethical, and organized;
  • Five years' experience as a full-time police officer preferred, Supervisory experience in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge of police procedures and practices, the law of arrest and criminal procedures.

REQUIREMENTS TOMAINTAIN APPOINTMENT:

  • All MassBay Community College sworn officers will be required to obtain/maintain their certification through POST and our agency shall not employ a decertified officer in any capacity in accordance with MGL c6E s4(g) which states; "No agency shall appoint or employ a person as a law enforcement officer unless the person is certified by the commission;"
  • Annual in-service training will be required;
  • Specialized training will be required;
  • A failure to maintain a license to carry a firearm and/or a valid driver's license will subject officers to dismissal;
  • Officers whose police appointment applications are pending will be assigned duties that do not require police authority.

Salary Range: AFSCME Unit II, Grade 19 Step 7 $75,609.56annually. Appointments from outside the bargaining unit begin atStep 1 of the range.
