Course Developer/Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Adjunct Faculty Member – Introduction to Sociology - General Education - Online Campus
Job Description:
Founded in 1979, The Chicago School is an independent professional graduate school with a dynamic student body and a professionally accomplished faculty. Our curriculum and training opportunities prepare graduates to deliver outstanding professional services emphasizing the ability to understand and work with diverse populations.
Position Summary:
The General Education Department is seeking a highly qualified candidate for a course developer and adjunct faculty position to create a new version of the course, SBS101 Introduction to Sociology, that will be offered as a social science requirement within the general education curriculum for undergraduate students in psychology and criminology degree programs at our Online campus.
Principal Duties:
This position requires subject matter expertise in psychology with the added ability to incorporate first-year-experience (FYE) components to create an introductory sociology course. The expectations for this course include:
Developing a cutting-edge online course. Design a 3-credit-hour online course with seven modules (containing 14 units).
Utilizing OER-based materials, free books within our university’s library, articles, or other online resources to keep learning costs low for our students.
Creating first-year-experience (FYE) components that will assist new students with understanding how to read a journal article, how to access and search the library, an introduction to APA, and how to be successful as an online student at The Chicago School.
Meeting deadlines. The course will be built starting in the summer of 2024 and finalized prior to the end of the 2024 calendar year so that it can be offered in January 2025. The SME will receive step-by-step guidance for course development from a SME course facilitator.
Online courses at The Chicago School are taught through the Canvas learning management system. Prior to teaching, all new adjunct faculty members in Online Programs will participate in our 7-week Teaching Online Pedagogy and Standards (TOPS) course, which covers best practices and new developments in online teaching and learning.
The candidate should be willing to develop the course and to teach the course. The course development will include creating course learning outcomes (CLOs) and module learning outcomes (MLOs), as well as a course map and syllabus. The Chicago School has instructional designers who will build your course into the Canvas LMS. Instruction of the course will include engaging students through discussion, assignments, and first-year-experience exercises as outlined in the course syllabus. Instructors will provide students with substantive feedback in a timely manner and respond to student questions and concerns. Adjunct instructors are expected to attend departmental meetings, professional development, and events virtually at least once during the teaching term. This sociology course is expected to be offered 4-6 times per year.
