Location: Remote, OREGON
Job Type: PartTime

Job Description:

Founded in 1979, The Chicago School is an independent professional graduate school with a dynamic student body and a professionally accomplished faculty. Our curriculum and training opportunities prepare graduates to deliver outstanding professional services emphasizing the ability to understand and work with diverse populations.

Position Summary:

The General Education Department is seeking highly qualified candidates for a course developer and adjunct faculty position for the development of Contemporary Math and College Algebra courses that will be offered as the two math requirements within the general education curriculum for undergraduate students in psychology and criminology degree programs at our Online campus

Principal Duties:

This position requires subject matter expertise in mathematics with the added ability to incorporate a co-requisite component to allow added support for first-year students with no prior testing or course history so they do not spend an extra term or money taking a developmental prerequisite math course.  The Chicago School is interested in developing courses that make real-world connections to the subject matter.

The expectations for these courses include:

  • Developing a cutting-edge online course. Design a 3-credit-hour online course with seven modules (containing 14 units).

  • Utilizing OER-based materials, free books within our university’s library, articles, or other online resources to keep learning costs low for our students. The Chicago School is interested in considering the use of OpenStax textbooks.

  • Designing co-requisite support for students who need additional assistance or developmental support for the concepts being presented. This may be presented through additional units built into the course or a separate course to run concurrently equal to 1 credit. OpenStax has a College Algebra textbook with co-requisite support built-in that should be considered.

  • Engagement with real-world activities to help prepare students for more advanced courses: Contemporary Math > College Algebra > Statistics. The General Education department was inspired by the Teach Rock site and the Math with Beyonce activities .

  • Meeting deadlines. The College Algebra course will be built starting in the summer of 2024 and finalized prior to the end of the 2024 calendar year so that it can be offered in January 2025. The Contemporary Math course will be built upon completion of the College Algebra course and offered mid-2025. The SME will receive step-by-step guidance for course development from an SME course facilitator.

Online courses at The Chicago School are taught through the Canvas learning management system. Prior to teaching, all new adjunct faculty members in Online Programs will participate in our 7-week Teaching Online Pedagogy and Standards (TOPS) course, which covers best practices and new developments in online teaching and learning.

The candidate should be willing to develop one or both courses and to teach that course. The course development will include creating course learning outcomes (CLOs) and module learning outcomes (MLOs), as well as a course map and syllabus. The Chicago School has instructional designers who will build your course into the Canvas LMS. Instruction of the course will include engaging students through discussion, assignments, and lab exercises as outlined in the course syllabus. Instructors will provide students with substantive feedback in a timely manner and respond to student questions and concerns. Adjunct instructors are expected to attend departmental meetings, professional development, and events virtually at least once during the teaching term. Each math course is offered in most terms (5-6 times per year).

Position Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Mathematics and a passion for its real-world applications. A doctoral degree is preferred.

  • Course development experience or training.

  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level is a must. Online teaching experience is preferred.

The department seeks an individual who can make math fun, relatable, and understandable, as well as engaging. Candidates with experience using technology in the classroom are strongly encouraged to apply.

In the application materials, please include a cover letter that addresses the position expectations and qualifications, as well as include a short description of your overall idea for the course. We’re looking to understand your thoughts on and judge your ability to create an interesting and engaging math course with both real-world activities and co-requisite support that is appropriate for general education requirements.

This opportunity is budgeted at $1,124-1,540 per credit and may vary per course with student enrollment. Additional compensation factors may impact total compensation.
