Job Description

The Marketing and Communications Copy Writer researches, writes, and edits the creation of editorial articles and publications, and other print and digital marketing materials.

This position is part of the W. P. Carey, Marketing and Communications team, made up of creative problem solvers with expertise in digital and print design, marketing content development, advertising and paid media planning, editorial writing and institutional communications, social media, and project management. We are a unit of the Dean’s Office, supporting strategic initiatives to grow the reputation and market presence of the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.

Salary Range

$55,000 - $62,000; to commensurate with education and experience


Essential Duties

  • Meets with stakeholders to discuss themes and objectives for an assignment, targets audience and desired outcomes
  • Plans and writes copy for use by internal and external publications to promote the school and its educational services
  • Consults with internal and marketing team to obtain information on copy or other variables, discussing style and length of the copy
  • Adapts published work for use across multiple mediums
  • Develops, through collaboration and independent work, key marketing messages for academic degrees, school programming, and advertising
  • Edits or rewrites existing copy as necessary, and writes articles and other promotional material as needed, promoting the school, its programs, success, students, and alumni
  • Reads and proofs materials prior to publication or distribution 
  • Develops and maintains close collaborative working relationships with colleagues, faculty, and outside constituencies

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or related field AND five years of experience writing, editing, news reporting or editorial research; OR, nine years of progressively responsible experience in writing, editing, journalism or editorial research; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
  • Excellent project management skills and adherence to multiple deadlines
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods; this includes alternate ways to inform and entertain via written, oral and visual media
  • Experience in organizing work and meeting various deadlines
  • Knowledge of computers/software programs and various applications
  • Experience writing in a journalistic or public relations setting
  • Basic coding ability (e.g., html) and experience with content management systems
  • Knowledge of online content strategy and creation
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Exceptional skill in social media writing, including use of hashtags
  • Experience with SEO concepts and social media marketing
  • Creativity, adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively with a team

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10%)
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (15%)
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
