The University of Virginia's Darden School of Business, one of the world's leading business schools, seeks a professional Copy Editor to join its Darden Business Publishing team. Reporting to the associate director, the copy editor supports faculty in the case-writing process to ensure products meet the high standard set for Darden teaching materials. Major duties include editing print and nonprint materials in accordance with the Darden Business Publishing Style Guide and the Chicago Manual of Style , 17th ed., providing feedback to faculty on the clarity and flow of the content, and assisting with releases and third-party permissions for cases and their related supplements.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. 

Responsibilities:

Professional Editing

  • Copyedits cases, teaching notes, technical notes, research papers, multimedia cases, books, and other educational content submitted by Darden faculty for clarity, grammar, spelling, organization, style, and format in a timely fashion. All editing must conform to the Chicago Manual of Style , 17th ed. and the Darden Business Publishing Style Guide .

  • Works with faculty, case authors, research assistants, developmental editors, marketing staff, and Darden Media staff to ensure content reflects the high standards of Darden Business Publishing. Works with Darden Case Collection personnel to see that cases are properly registered as part of the Darden Collection.

  • Proofs final copy of educational materials prior to publishing.

  • Reviews and edits all metadata to ensure consistent and accurate information.

Project Management

  • Evaluates excerpts, exhibits, charts, graphs, tables, and so on, for third-party content, appearance, format, and accuracy.

  • Works with faculty and developmental editors to obtain rights, copyright permissions, and releases necessary to publish and sell teaching materials. Works with Darden Business Publishing sales and marketing staff to ensure all unrestricted documents are made available for external sale.

  • Responsible for ensuring documents publish on schedule.

Other Duties

  • Performs other duties as assigned by associate director and/or director of Darden Business Publishing. In the past, these have consisted of data entry projects, metadata and permissions review projects, and product standardization projects.

Education and Professional Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications or a related field and at least three years of experience.

  • A thorough knowledge of the rules of American English grammar, spelling, and punctuation per Chicago Manual of Style , 17th ed., is required.

  • Understanding of the publishing process and copyright regulations.

  • Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment, and attention to detail.

  • Must be computer savvy and proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; experience in MS SharePoint is preferred.

  • Copyediting test required.
