Job Description

This position is a key member of the Professional Development and Engagement team advancing graduate student  initiatives that serve the ASU Charter and Design Aspirations. The Coordinator, Sr Professional Development and Engagement oversees and supports programming aimed at the co-curricular socialization and professional development of graduate students and postdocs. This position reports to the Director, Professional Development and Engagement at the Graduate College.
Business hours for the Graduate College are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ASU is a diverse enterprise with a wide variety of work and learning modes, locations and a commitment to sustainability, innovation and employee work-life balance. Essential Duties

  • Initiates, plans and delivers services and programs for graduate students (including master's, doctoral, online and international) and postdocs throughout the ASU lifecycle, including orientation, onboarding, mentor engagement, transferable skill and career agility mindset development. Current programming includes:
    • Credit-bearing courses (New Scholars Colloquium, Preparing Future Faculty seminar, Grant writing seminar).
    • Asynchronous certifications through the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning.
    • Asynchronous and synchronous badging for teacher development and design thinking.
    • Annual appreciation week events and bi-annual welcome events for ASU postdoctoral scholars.
    • Asynchronous and synchronous orientations for new graduate students, new teaching assistants and research assistants.
    • Networking and professional development events for students and postdocs in special populations (Graduate College Enrichment Fellows, Presidential Graduate Assistants, Presidential Postdoctoral Fellows).
    • Leadership opportunities for students (Student Advisory group) and Postdocs (Postdoc Council).
    • Mentorship recognition through the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Awards and reception.
  • Research and develop online and in-person trainings and tools to assist students with navigating different stages of the graduate experience. 
  • Oversees program/event work plans.
  • May supervise interns, student workers or teaching assistants.
  • Acts as lead on projects as assigned.
  • Develops and monitors daily operations and coordinates program/project activities within financial guidelines including developing and maintaining processes for assessment and tracking of activities and participation.
  • Contributes to design of equitable processes for reviewing and selecting applications and nominations (e.g. Student Advisory Panel, Outstanding Faculty Mentor Awards).
  • Cross-trains with other members of the team.
  • Contributes to the promotion and marketing of assigned projects/events/activities 
    • Design and implement communication and promotion across different/multiple media (e.g., creating/developing web pages, podcasts, online course modules).
    • Create articles and publications to increase presence in the Graduate College and ASU newsletters.
    • Coordinate distribution of brochures, flyers and other promotional materials in consultation with the Director, Communications and Marketing. 
  • Works closely with Events/Admin Program Coordinator to manage event planning, marketing and logistics.
  • Troubleshoots issues impacting success of initiatives.
  • May assist in the development of grant proposals. 
  • Cultivates and maintains partnerships with key teams and individuals on campus.
  • Engages with faculty committed to graduate student and postdoctoral professional development and incorporates feedback and suggestions into program/project activities.
  • Participates in efforts to integrate professional development efforts for graduate students including across campus.
  • Design and conduct assessments to evaluate program effectiveness, and recommend and implement changes to advance program goals and outcomes.
  • Oversees the development and facilitation of workshops, meetings or conferences with high impact on program and/or participants; monitors logistics, scheduling and participant communications. 
    • Develop, utilize and effectively maintain records for participation in team efforts
    • Employ appropriate methods to gather information (e.g., identify metrics, data resources, conduct focus groups, surveys) relevant to the stated outcomes and goals for team efforts.
  • Establishes and maintains direct contact with outside organizations and university departments. 
    • Stays abreast of graduate student and postdoctoral scholars' professional development trends and graduate education administration trends.
  • Provides assistance and guidance to faculty, staff and outside organizations regarding function/program.
  • All other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND five (5) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of assessment principles to evaluate program effectiveness
  • Experience working with a high level of attention to detail   
  • Experience in prioritizing a varied workload and meeting multiple, overlapping deadlines
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team to achieve common goals 
  • Experience with MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook)

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk or travel moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions
  • May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses
