Summary

The Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) seeks a highly motivated and student-centered professional to serve as Coordinator of Supplemental Instruction. The Coordinator manages all aspects of CSP's Peer Academic Support Program during the regular academic year and spring and summer terms. This includes day-to-day operations, program development, and the recruitment, training, and supervision of approximately 30 student staff members during the regular academic year.

In addition to their work with academic peer leaders during the regular academic year, the Coordinator will be responsible for leading the hiring and initial onboarding of 30-35 course assistants for the Summer Bridge Scholars Program (SBSP). During the 7-weeks of SBSP, the Coordinator will collaborate with and provide ongoing support to the course-specific Course Assistant Coordinators to ensure alignment with the mission and values of our academic peer support program.

What You'll Do

About Supplemental Instruction in CSP

One of the longest-running resources CSP provides, the Peer Academic Support Program (formerly, CSP tutoring) provides students with one-on-one and group peer academic support in a wide range of subject areas, including mathematics, computer science, foreign languages, economics, and other social science courses. Most academic peer leaders - our term for peer tutors -are undergraduate students who have excelled in the courses they support. Their training centers active learning, student agency, and an equitable approach to instruction, encouraging student staff to engage their peers as co-learners. Academic peer leaders provide CSP students with weekly one-on-one support in upwards of twenty different courses. Experienced staff also offer weekly drop-in support hours in high-demand subjects such as Spanish, computer science, and mathematics. Along with coordinating peer tutoring, the Coordinator also oversees the CSP/Kaplan Scholarships, offering free test preparation in GRE, MCAT and LSAT to around sixty CSP students each year.

The Coordinator will work with CSP's Management Team, which consists of the CSP Leadership Team, the Coordinator of New Student Initiatives, and the Coordinator of Student Success Programming. A breakdown of their work with each constituency in CSP is bulleted below:

  • The Coordinator will work with the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning to provide CSP students with academic support through innovative and accessible peer-led learning models that align with CSP's teaching mission;
  • The Coordinator will work with CSP faculty to develop co-curricular academic support events including roundtables, colloquia, panel discussions;
  • The Coordinator will work with CSP advising to strengthen student success programming across CSP, including the development and facilitation of study groups.
  • The Coordinator will, through their leadership of the management and assessment of data connected with student usage of peer-led academic support in CSP, including student survey responses, provide regular feedback to the CSP leadership team on the experiences and outcomes of CSP students using our academic peer support services.

Who We Are

About CSP

Forged out of three decades of organized, direct action led by the Black Action Movement (BAM), the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) is a learning community and academic unit serving over 3,000 undergraduate students annually, many of whom identify with populations that have been historically underrepresented in U.S. higher education. CSP students are identified through the highly selective U-M admissions process and are the top students in their home communities. First-time first-year and transfer students are admitted to CSP in the spring, summer, fall, and winter terms. Students who are not admitted to CSP may choose to become a CSP affiliate at any point in their undergraduate career.

CSP sits within LSA's Division of Undergraduate Education and provides comprehensive academic support to U-M students. This includes a multidisciplinary curriculum, holistic academic advising, academic and co-curricular programming, the Summer Bridge Scholars Program, and student support services that utilize high-impact, inclusive practices to encourage student agency and engagement.

As an academic program rooted in student activism and coalition building in the service of educational and social transformation, CSP's mission is three-fold:

  • To foster a supportive learning community that empowers students to take ownership of their learning, and be leaders in and beyond the university
  • To advocate for the recruitment, matriculation, and persistence of minoritized student populations
  • To be leading practitioners of anti-racist, inclusive, and accessible education
