Essential Functions:

  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive school health services program for students, following the guidelines of the PA School code, PA DOH Regulations, the Division of School Health guidelines, PA DOE Regulations, and school district policies using collected data.
  • Provides up-to-date information for school personnel use on all Health-related subjects including but not limited to: the growth and development pattern of children, first aid practice, accident prevention, plan of care, therapy plan, and communicable disease regulations.
  • Manages the School Nurse Staff, assigning and delegating tasks as appropriate.
  • Maintains comprehensive health records on each child, including but not limited to immunization records and records of school nursing services.
  • Inputs student data into school medical and educational databases (ex. Magnus, PowerSchool, Esped)
  • Ensures accurate and timely data reporting to all necessary internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides direct services to students, using the nursing process to provide care to the school community in accordance with current medical practice and nursing standards, relevant statuses, and regulations.
  • Performs and/or oversees mandated screenings and completes referrals and follow-ups where applicable.
  • Collaborate with a Registered Dietitian to effectuate and rehabilitate the school’s allergy plan and protocol.
  • Manages and controls acute and chronic disease.
  • Carries out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases, in collaboration with the PA Department of Health and the Director of Health and Safety.
  • Provides first aid for illness or injury to students and staff; and documents and nursing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Establishes health care plans (IHP’s) for students with complex special health care needs and updates them as needed. Where applicable, participates in IEP meetings.
  • Provides health teaching and counseling for a variety of topics, such as universal precautions, tube feeding, EpiPen, seizure management, allergy management, positive health and wellness behaviors, etc.
  • Track and monitor the prescribed medication and treatments system to ensure all prescription bottles are labeled properly and delivered in a safe manner according to physician orders and all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Informs teachers of the health conditions of students which may affect behavior, appearance, or scholastic performance.
  • Collaborates with agencies within and outside of the school community to ensure continuity of service and care of students.
  • Plan and execute collaborative operations with families for new students throughout the admissions process. Consistently partnering with the admissions team to determine student eligibility for admission into the school.
  • Oversee all facets of operation for private duty nurses who collaborate with students on an individual basis. Plan and administer meetings with each new private duty nurse to engage in correspondence regarding school guidelines.
  • Forge partnerships with the HR department to ensure prompt and effective care for injured staff, directing staff to workers’ compensation and completing required workers’ compensation paperwork.
  • Serves in an on-call supervisory position for the designated Whitehall Nurse in monitoring health and well-being of residential students and medication administration.
  • Assists in budget preparation by advising school administrations in preparing a budget for the health program and facilities and shall advise the administration on the financial needs for the health services program.
  • Participates in Professional Development Day either as a participant or presenter; Serves on various school committees as requested, to improve the overall function of the Health Services Department and School.
  • Assists in the development of Departmental policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, from an accredited Institution.
  • Valid School Nurse Certification Required, Valid Pennsylvania Registered Nurse License.
  • CPR and First Aid for Nurses must be current, Valid Driver’s License.
  • 5 years of nursing experience, with pediatrics and young adults in a school, residential or similar setting, preferred.
  • Communication skills (oral and written) and confidence in conveying information to various stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Exercise sound professional judgment in making decisions.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite of applications.

 
Physical Requirements:

  • Requires prolonged sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and reaching.
  • Repetitive motion of the finger and hands for the keyboard and file room.
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs minimum; Participate in 2-person lifts.
