JOB SUMMARY

The Coordinator is responsible for the Center for Gender + Sexualities, including: managing the center, creating programs, initiatives, services and partnerships that support, assist and empower students from diverse gender, sexual orientation and other intersecting identities. This individual will work collaboratively with the Office of Inclusive Excellence, Hedgeman Center, Diversity Initiatives Steering Committee (DISC), Title IX, and other areas on campus to reinforce best practices relating to student development, advocacy and support regarding sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation identity. Related, this staff member will provide the subject matter expertise to support Hamline University students, staff and faculty in advancing the full inclusion, belonging and equity for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

SEXUALITIES & GENDER DIVERSITY SUPPORT, PROGRAMS, AND SERVICES

  • Manage and coordinate the Center for Gender + Sexualities
    • Supervise and support the Center for Gender + Sexualities graduate assistant and student staff
    • Coordinate, maintain, and development of the center’s scheduling, programming, events, budget, website, marketing, social media and training materials.
  • Create programming, training, and networking opportunities for women, femme, and LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, staff and alumni.
  • Manage, develop and maintain the Rainbow Inclusion Network training and advocacy program on LGBTQIA+ issues.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement programming focused on educating Hamline’s community on women, femme and LGBTQIA+ community, identities, and concerns, including:
    • The Rainbow Reception, Q-Unity Student Retreat, Coming Out Week, and the Lavender Gala.
    • Key women, femme, and LGBTQIA+ community awareness days.
    • Initiatives for male students that address individual identity development, patriarchy and sexism, sexual violence and the development of a healthy male identify and community.
    • Collaborate with various organizations program initiatives and support groups to advance networking, collaboration and synergy around common issues and opportunities, including Women’s Leadership Retreat, and Twin Cities Pride.
  • Advise Spectrum (LGBTQIA student organization) and Women Boss UP (women and femme focused student organization) on leadership, organizational and event programming, and identity development, as well as coordinate the TransForm support group.
  • Engage the campus in developing and implementing institutional LGBTQIA+ inclusive policies, protocols, programs and practices.
  • Mentor, counsel and support individual women, femme, and LGBTQIA students.
  • Outreach to university and community organizations from diverse ethnic, racial, social economic and other cultural and social lenses that promote positive sexual identity and gender based self-images.

MISCELLANEOUS RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a resource for issues of diversity and inclusion in the realm of gender, sexual orientation and the intersections of these with other diversity and social justice issues and identities including serving on DISC or other campus wide committees.
  • Assist with crisis management, counseling and intervention as issues arise.
  • Other duties as requested.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • This position reports to the:  Associate Vice President/ Associate Dean of Students
  • This position supervises one Graduate Assistant, three student workers, as well as interns and volunteers.

BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for managing the operation budget, as well as a gift fund.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Experience working with students in a higher education institution in the areas of academic success, student development, diversity and social justice, and advising students in student organizations.
  • Experience with training on topics related to sex, gender, sexuality, from healthy sexuality and sex positive frames.
  • Understanding of student development theories and diversity education with previous experience developing services and programs for students of diverse genders and sexual orientations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to facilitate presentations and programs.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years working in a college or university with experience in student affairs, LGBT student support, student diversity programming or a related field; can be as a graduate student.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Higher Education, Student Personnel, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience working with LGBT students, training or programming.
  • Two (2) years experience providing supervision of undergraduate students.
  • Two (2) years experience in program planning, implementation and co-curricular assessment. 
  • Professional experience in budget development and management.
  • Experience working with community partners and networking on university outreach initiatives.

WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT

Must perform the following essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Ability to work some evening and weekend programs.
  • Ability to travel on and off campus locations.
  • Must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to participate for extended periods of time during some campus events, as needed.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry 5-50 lbs. on a rare basis.

  • This is a full time, 1.0 FTE, exempt position, 11 months a year (.92FT).
