Job Description

The Coordinator of Educational Programming and Outreach in The Gardens at Texas A&M University will provide oversight and leadership of the educational programs and outreach activities associated with The Gardens. Educational programs will target a wide range of demographic groups through collaborative efforts with extension and outreach personnel from within the Texas A&M University and Texas A&M AgriLife agencies. Programs will emphasis The Garden educational missions and embody the spirit of the land grant mission. The coordinator of educational programming and outreach will be responsible for initiating, planning, and executing an innovative and collaborative educational program for the garden. Programs should leverage existing extension and outreach programs through cooperative and facilitative efforts with existing efforts programs, particularly those with closely related missions. The coordinator of educational programming and outreach would also be expected to assist in oversight of garden tours and volunteer activities associated with visiting groups, particularly school and youth groups. The coordinator of educational programming and outreach will collaborate with the Texas A&M AgriLife events staff to assist in various educational and outreach events held in The Gardens.

Specific duties would include:

  • Develop and execute innovative and collaborative garden programming consistent with the missions of The Gardens.
  • Facilitate the efforts of other Texas A&M University and Texas A&M AgriLife faculty and staff in their educational and outreach efforts, particularly those directly associated with activities in The Gardens.
  • Provide primary oversight to tour groups visiting The Gardens, particularly those related to school groups or youth programs.
  • Facilitate training and provide oversight to volunteers and volunteer groups associated with educational programming or event efforts in The Gardens.
  • Collaborate with other garden team members in planning, coordinating, and executing creative educational programming for The Gardens.
  • Facilitate and coordinate outreach efforts with garden team members.
  • Oversee compliance with restrictions and training associated with staff and volunteer interactions with groups containing minors visiting the garden.
  • Assist in formulating mechanisms to defray the costs associated with educational programming and tours.
  • Assist event staff and other garden team members in preparing for periodic events in the garden.
  • Collaborate with the Garden Manager and SSC staff in preparing for educational programing, outreach activities, and volunteer oversight.
  • Assist MarCom staff in online educational and outreach efforts as needed.
  • Order, procure, move, organize and store training and supply materials required for educational and outreach efforts in The Garden.
  • Other duties as occasionally assigned by the Director of The Gardens at Texas A&M University.

Required Education and Experience:
-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
-Four years of related experience.

Preferred Education:

-A Masters degree, or Bachelors degree with equivalent experience, in Education, Public Garden Management, or related field with an emphasis on educational programming.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Basic computer skills to assist in online educational efforts in conjunction with MarCom staff, processing of reports, billing, volunteer management, development of educational materials, etc.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience organizing, executing, and assessing collaborative educational programs and outreach efforts. Previous experience specifically with educational programming, volunteer management, or extension programing related to horticulture is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, evidence of strong organizational skills, and ability to develop programming partnerships.
  • Ability to work outdoors under a wide range of seasonal weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift garden and educational materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate university vehicles or those rented by the university to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.
