Job Summary

The Coordinator reports to the Director of Internships and Career Service Program (ICS) at the Institute of Politics (IOP) at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). The IOP ICS program offers comprehensive, substantive, and formative programming to Harvard Undergraduates interested in pursuing summer internship or post-graduation opportunities in politics and public service. The Coordinator will serve as the “front line” to the ICS team and will be responsible for the day-to-day administrative logistics of the program, including the planning, preparation, and execution of weekly events, application processes, student inquiries, and campus outreach.

The successful candidate will have a strong desire to work with students to encourage involvement in both public service and the political process.

This position will require occasional evening work.   


Position Description

The ICS Coordinator plays a key role in planning and organizing multiple internship programs. The Director’s Internship Program is a leading and visible program at the IOP and partners with 100 public sector organizations and offices all over the world to provide full time, substantive summer internship opportunities for Harvard undergraduate students. IOP Director’s Internships are highly competitive and will receive 1000+ applications for review. The Coordinator is responsible for application collection, organization, and management for the Director’s Internship program and various other ICS programs throughout the academic year. This position ensures the files are accurate and complete when recorded in the database and when shared with host organizations for review.

In addition to application management, this position will assist the Director and Coordinator with all aspects of programming including, but not limited to: the creation and implementation of an application and review process for the IOP’s internship & stipend program; the creation of a weekly email newsletter; work with the Harvard Office of Career Service and other Harvard public service organizations in coordinating weekly career service events.

The Coordinator will work on other special programs as needed and will work in collaboration with IOP colleagues on Institute-wide projects. 


Basic Qualifications

1+ years of administrative support experience.  Internships will count toward required experience. 


Additional Qualifications and Skills

Any combination of the following, a plus:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.  
  • Experience or interest in politics, career services or higher education experience is beneficial. 
  • Candidate should have social media experience and knowledge. 
  • Ability to work in a team. 
  • Strong customer service orientation. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 
  • The ability to work well in a busy environment with frequent interruptions. 
  • Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.  
  • Ability to interact professionally and comfortably with faculty, colleagues, students, guests, external vendors, and partners. 
  • Good judgment, attention to detail, excellent writing skills and comfort in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Prior experience working with database applications.

Salary Range: $54,340 - $85,675
Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
