Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Programs for Campus Recreation, the Fitness & Wellness Coordinator assists with the oversight and supervision of the Fitness & Wellness program area 118,700 square-foot, Mashouf Wellness Center, opened in 2017. Areas of supervision include expansion of the Group Fitness program, developing and overseeing the Personal Training program, Massage Therapy program, and Wellness programming. The incumbent provides program guidance, support, and supervises student assistants in program areas. Incumbent will support the mission of the SFSU campus, Student Affairs & Enrollment Management (SAEM) cabinet area, and Campus Recreation/Mashouf Wellness Center. The incumbent will need to apply their knowledge in fitness and wellness to coordinate and develop a comprehensive fitness program including, but not limited to, Group Fitness, Personal Training, Massage Therapy, Virtual Reality Wellness, and Wellness related special events. The incumbent will directly supervise approximately 50 student employees across their areas and 20 casual workers. The incumbent must have a strong understanding of student development theory and practices to keep a high standard of student leadership, development, and engagement within their program areas. The incumbent will also interpret and apply standards and regulations for all their respective areas to ensure safe and effective programming that is based on theory and research. The incumbent collaborates with: Recreation, Parks and Tourism Department; Department of Kinesiology; Intercollegiate Athletics; Environmental, Health & Safety; Facilities Services; Health Promotion & Wellness; Risk Management; Student Life (Residential Life, Student Activities & Events New Student Programs, etc.); Student Health Center; SF State Sustainability; University Communications; University Police Department; and other units as appropriate. The incumbent must strategically align work and outcomes in a way that supports the mission of the SF State campus, Student Affairs & Enrollment Management (SAEM) cabinet area, and Campus Recreation/Mashouf Wellness Center, and is in line with NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, and other higher education and industry best practices. 

 

Position Information

Supervision of Student Staff and Casual Workers

  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates 50-70 student staff members and casual workers in program areas.
  • Provides leadership for student managers in program areas.
  • Sets learning outcomes and provides continuing education for student staff to enhance skills and obtain or maintain appropriate certifications through workshops, instructional seminars, and conference attendance.

Development and Supervision of Programming in Fitness & Wellness Program Areas

  • Promote, supervise, and evaluate introductory classes and educational sessions for members.
  • Plan and host small group training programs to engage groups of less than 10 participants in structured fitness activities; and specialized programs.
  • Provide consultations to referred students and other members to assist them with adopting appropriate fitness and wellness practices that support their overall wellbeing.

Establishing and Maintaining Customer Relations, and Inter- and Intra-Departmental Collaborations and Communication as Related to Program Areas

  • Collaborate with the university community on intersectional health and/or student experience areas
  • Serve on university, divisional, and departmental committees as needed
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with department colleagues, as well as other partners across campus

Administrative Tasks

  •  Assisting with hiring, scheduling, and payroll review of Fitness Floor Staff
  •  Recommending repairs or replacement of equipment and facilities within program areas

Administrative Leadership

  • Assist in establishing short and long-term goals for the Department

Other Duties as Assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

Entry to this classification requires comprehensive knowledge and skills in the fitness and wellness program within the recreation department. A bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Exercise Science, or a related field and work experience within campus recreation, higher education, or health and wellness are required.

  • Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program and/or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program and/or administrative specialty.
  • Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.
  • Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. 
  • Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form.
  • Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.

 

Required License/Certifications 

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
  • National Fitness Training Certification for Group Exercise and/or Personal Training from the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), or equivalent within three (3) months of hire 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Exercise Science, or a related field;
  • Understanding of the application of student development concepts, including principles of individual and group behavior, and advising students individually and in groups on routine matters;
  • Experience with developing and promoting programs and services within area of oversight through a lens of social justice, sustainability, accessibility, and non-traditional as well as traditional programming;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Strategic Values and Core Competencies for NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, and SF State’s Strategic Plan values;
  • Experience with new program and service development and implementation;
  • Experience overseeing a comprehensive fitness and wellness program
  • Experience overseeing certification prep courses for group fitness instruction and personal training;
  • Experience overseeing a wellness education program and delivering educational workshops;
  • Experience overseeing a massage therapy program;  Experience overseeing care, maintenance, cleanliness, and layout of fitness equipment;
  • Demonstrated technology, software, and hardware skills including the use of Microsoft Office;
  • Experience providing high quality customer service, and contributing to a positive, friendly, work and wellness environment;

Ability to:

  • Oversee daily operations of fitness areas including student staff and casual workers, registrations, and equipment and facility upkeep;
  • Develop and administer Fitness & Wellness Program Areas including, but not limited to, hiring and supervising student staff (fitness floor staff, personal trainers, group fitness instructors, massage therapists), coordinating services and events, and working with Facilities staff and vendors assigned to maintain fitness, strength, and cardio equipment;
  • Instruct, train, and certify in fitness-related areas, in support of the department’s and University’s goals for health and well-being;
  • Work effectively with students who have a variety of skill and experience levels, and who will be working in various levels, from entry to program management levels;
  • Plan and implement semester fitness class schedules including a variety of classes such as yoga, strength, dance, fitness, cycling, kickboxing, etc.;
  • Rapidly acquire general knowledge of overall operation and functions of the fitness and wellness program areas;
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure safe instruction and risk management;
  • Assess the safety, risk management, and environmental needs as applied to the fitness and wellness programs within the department;
  • Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning and implementing short and long-range improvements; o Collect and evaluate data and make presentations based on these data;
  • Respond positively to feedback and support efforts for improvement;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; and
  • Work independently and as part of a team 

 

Environmental/Physical/Special

Duties take place mostly in an office setting or in fitness/recreation spaces, with primary locations at the Mashouf Wellness Center. Ability to: succeed in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; work variable nights, weekends and/or holidays, on campus or off-site, indoors and outdoors, depending upon work conditions and demands, including an occasional overnight stay; use computers and other communication tools for extended periods of time; and competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and campus community.
