The Mashouf Wellness Center is a student-driven Wellness Center guiding development through transformative activities, creating a sense of belonging within our community, and being a key partner in integrating health and wellness across the University.

Monday through Friday; from 9:00am to 6:00pm

 

Anticipated Hiring Range

$4,600 to $4,900 per month ($55,200 to $58,800 annually)

 

Salary is commensurate with experience.

 

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Campus Recreation, the Coordinator for Accessible & Inclusive Recreation oversees and supervises inclusive and accessible recreation programming for the new, state of the art, 118,700 square-foot, Mashouf Wellness Center (MWC), which opened in 2017. The incumbent leads the department in programming activities that are transformative and promote belonging within the San Francisco State University (SFSU) community.  The incumbent sets policies and practices for ensuring the facilities and programs are inclusive and accessible for all people.  Areas of oversight include, but are not limited to, program development, promotions, program management and supervision, and program risk management.  The incumbent works directly with a variety of student employees and may work with interns.

The incumbent is involved in the development and implementation of inclusive and accessible programs, best practices, and philosophies. The incumbent collaborates with: the Disability Programs and Resource Center; Recreation, Parks and Tourism Department; Department of Kinesiology; Intercollegiate Athletics; Environmental, Health & Safety; Facilities Services; Health Promotion & Wellness; Risk Management; Student Life (Residential Life, Student Activities & Events New Student Programs, etc.); Student Health Center; SF State Sustainability; University Communications; University Police Department; and other units as appropriate.

The incumbent provides core services in special event support in working on signature special events or working in collaboration and support of other entities in putting together one-time events or tournaments.  The incumbent supports the creative planning process, encouraging each event to become a celebration, and may use special events to attract participation in non-traditional programming.

The incumbent provides lead work direction for approximately 20-30 student employees, including student managers who assist with: planning, managing special events, and inclusive recreation programs.  All student employees enforce program policies and respond to incidents and injuries.  The incumbent must have a strong understanding of student development theory and practices to keep a high standard of student leadership, development, and engagement within their program areas.  The MWC is student-driven in its operations, and it is expected that students will be involved in decision-making alongside the incumbent, and the delivery of programs and services throughout the department.  The ability for this person to advise, mentor, and provide the development of student leadership is key.

The incumbent must strategically align work and outcomes in a way that supports the mission of the SF State campus, Student Affairs & Enrollment Management (SAEM) cabinet area, and Campus Recreation/Mashouf Wellness Center, and is in line with NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, and other higher education and industry best practices.

 

Position Information

Structuring Work

  • Provide direct service to members inclusive of assessing, recommending, and implementing appropriate programs and accommodations;
  • Partner with and lead the Mashouf Wellness Center staff in identification, planning, development, execution, and review of inclusive and accessible programs;
  • Develop and implement practices, guidelines, and philosophies for inclusive and accessible recreation; and
  • Actively lead and/or participate in staff meetings, staff trainings, regional and national organizations, University-wide committees and work teams, and other departmental meetings as appropriate.

Building Teams

  • Lead, manage, supervise, and mentor student staff (direct and indirect reports) within an organizational model with a strong commitment to student leadership and student development;
  • Lead, provide lead work direction for staff in the identification, development and execution of strategic initiatives in support of department, cabinet area and University strategic plans, goals, and objectives;
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with on and off-campus entities including, but not limited to the following: Associated Students; Department of Recreation, Parks, Tourism; Department of Kinesiology; Intercollegiate Athletics; Environment, Health & Safety; Facilities Services; Health Promotion & Wellness; Risk Management; Student Life (Residential Life, Student Activities & Events, Career Services, New Student Programs, etc.); Student Health Center; SF State Sustainability; University Communications; University Police Department; and other units as appropriate; and
  • Work collaboratively with each area to ensure compliance with American with Disabilities Act.

Supporting Team Development

  • Support department specific staff development programs.
  • Regularly facilitate educational workshops related to scope of work for students and staff

Using & Sharing Information

  • Actively advise and educate University employees and Mashouf Wellness Center participants and stakeholders about compliance requirements, trends and industry best practices as related to inclusive and accessible recreation; and
  • Participate in department assessment efforts: collect and utilize data and provide reports to participants and stakeholders to actively update and provide basis for diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

Administrative Leadership

  • Incorporate the strategic values adopted by the SFSU Strategic Plan and NIRSA into the delivery of operations and services; and
  • Develop work in support of healthy people and communities, and efforts towards student success, retention, and graduation.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

  • Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program and/or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program and/or administrative specialty.
  • Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.
  • Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form.
  • Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in recreation, sports administration, educational leadership, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related professional experience with progressively increasing responsibilities over time.
  • Working knowledge of NIRSA’s Strategic Values and Core Competencies and application within the collegiate recreation setting.
  • Demonstrated record of successfully planning, leading, implementing, supervising, and evaluating programs, projects, or initiatives in accordance with applicable guidelines, regulations, and policies.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and respectfully in a culturally diverse and ethnically rich environment.
  • Proven ability in the effective supervision, management, and evaluation of personnel, including the ability to inspire, influence and lead others towards achieving and maintaining high rates of participant and employee satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate the role student life plays in recruitment, student success, retention, and graduation, and a commitment to college student development and student leadership.
  • Knowledge of the LEED rating system and a demonstrated commitment to sustainable business operations.
  • Prior experience managing a collegiate recreation or sports facility.
  • Certification in American Red Cross Adult First Aid/CPR/AED or equivalent.

 

Environmental/Physical/Special

Duties take place mostly in an office setting, with primary locations at the Mashouf Wellness Center.

Ability to: succeed in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; work variable nights, weekends and/or holidays, on-campus or off-site, indoors and outdoors, depending upon work conditions and demands, including an occasional overnight stay; use computers and other communication tools for extended periods of time; and competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and campus community.
