Position Focus:

The Conservation Scientist will join a team of researchers and informaticians at the Center for Biodiversity and Global Change  to conduct conservation science research and analyze global biodiversity datasets. The candidate will have a strong background in data integration and an interest in studying global biodiversity change. A particular research focus for this position is the analysis of visual, acoustic, and other biodiversity sensor data (e.g., camera traps, acoustic sensors, GPS tracking, citizen science data) in combination with remotely sensed and other environmental data to quantify ecological change across taxa and regions. The Conservation Scientist will develop and apply new methods to calculate explicit biodiversity change metrics that support formally recognized global biodiversity indicators and liaise closely with Map of Life to develop actionable science products. They will collaborate with partners such as Wildlife Insights and NASA to advance biodiversity insights. As the other duties allow, the position will also support 10-15% time for leading training programs targeted at building capacity in conservation technology in high-biodiversity regions.


Essential Duties

1. In liaison with the Center leadership perform collaborative quantitative biodiversity research for peer-reviewed publications in leading and supporting roles.  2. Ensure high data integrity and management of multiple large datasets.  3. Maintain productive working relationships with partners to achieve shared science goals.  4. Collaborate closely with other members of the Center to advance science and conservation tools.  5. Maintain leading expertise in ecological sensors, analytical approaches, and the potential impacts of their use.  6. Support the integration of research and tools into Map of Life.  7. Lead capacity-building programs for underrepresented groups in conservation science and technology.  8. Represent Center science, tools, and applications to research and conservation communities.


Required Education and Experience

Ph.D. in a scientific discipline and five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated expertise in analyzing biodiversity sensor data to derive ecological insights.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated expertise in various conservation technologies and their abilities to assess ecological change.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Strong record of publishing peer-reviewed publications in leading journals.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated experience integrating remotely sensed and in-situ data to assess ecological change.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and organizational skills with the proven ability to manage multiple projects and processes simultaneously.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and postdoctoral research experience.
