Position will end on or before December 31, 2024. Permanent status cannot be earned in this grant funded position. This Temporary appointment can be concluded prior to the stated temporary appointment end date, normally with a two-week notice period. Continuation of this temporary appointment is contingent upon grant funding.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$7,100.00 - $7,810.00 Per Month ($85,200.00 - $93,720.00 Annually)

Position Summary

The Conservation and Restoration Coordinator (CRC) for the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) acts as the NERR’s point person for activities related to the stewardship, conservation, restoration, and resilience of the San Francisco Bay Reserve and the SF estuary. The CRC develops and leads NERR’s conservation, restoration, resilience, and climate change adaptation efforts. The CRC’s primary responsibilities are to support the SF Bay NERR’s Management Plan’s goals and objectives and 312 Recommendations through developing and applying research, monitoring, and scientific principles within a collaborative engagement context, and through participation in wide variety of regional advisory committees and conservation efforts. The CRC reports to the Reserve Manager and works closely with the research, education, and coastal training coordinators, staff, and students. The Conservation and Restoration program engages community members, tribes, students, funders, regulatory and resource agencies, conservation organizations, and NOAA/OCM with the SF Bay NERR field sites and other SF Estuary sites and partner organizations through projects and programs to advance the resiliency of the region’s estuarine natural resources and their benefits to the region’s communities.

Position Information

Lead NERR projects centered around natural resource stewardship, conservation, restoration, and climate change adaptation

• China Camp – in close collaboration with Parks, Friends of China Camp (FOCC), NERR staff, 1) lead completion of the feasibility studies for the road adaptation project, including working closely with Parks, Marin County Department of Public Works and Supervisor’s offices, and large community stakeholder group, 2) support and lead where appropriate on variety of projects and plans to conserve, enhance, and restore the ecology of China Camp, 3) pursue ongoing funding to advance adaption through to implementation and beyond.
• Rush Ranch – in close collaboration with SLT, NERR staff, 1) be the NERR point person for Goat Island restoration planning and implementation, 2) lead feral pig and invasive vegetation management planning and implementation, 3) lead restoration monitoring and adaptive management.
• San Francisco Estuary Regional Climate Science Consortium – in close collaboration with EOS Center faculty, resource and regulatory agency personnel, and CZM partners, serve as science lead for the Consortium – recruiting scientists to participate, managing those scientists’ contributions, lead preparing science synthesis documents, engaging with external entities, presenting before variety of groups.
• Projects and initiatives within Reserve’s Targeted Watershed, such as 1) support building projects with range of partners where NERR capacities and expertise can help advance moving projects forward, including preparing grant applications and defining collaboration relationships with partners, 2) support Richardson Bay boundary expansion if the decision is made to move forward.
• Plan, organize, and carry out research and monitoring, make recommendations, and take action based on findings. Coordinate research with the NERR research coordinator  Schedule and direct volunteers, work crews, and NERR and partner staff
• Make public presentations for a wide variety of audiences

Support and develop regional collaborations to apply NERR capabilities

• Provide scientific and technical expertise and leadership for the NERR with the San Francisco Estuary Blueprint, San Francisco Bay Joint Venture Implementation Plan, Wetland Regional Monitoring Program, Suisun Marsh Adaptive Management Advisory Team, Delta Interagency Adaptive Management Integration Team, and other regional coordination bodies.

Provide GIS functions for the reserve 

• Prepare maps for Reserve and project-specific activities
• Maintain GIS metadata for all work conduct
• Gather and manage GIS data

Assist with other Reserve programs

• Assist with scientific research in tidal marshes and other estuarine habitats
• Assist with and at time lead topographic surveys and related GIS and GPS derived mapping in tidal marshes and other estuarine habitats
• Support other colleagues with projects and tasks, such as meeting facilitation or leading tours

Perform administrative duties

• Track program activities for national database and narrative descriptions in progress reporting, develop annual work plans, complete university-required trainings at onboarding and periodically thereafter, track budget expenditures and support cost tracking for and administration of NERR grants, develop and maintain effective working relationships, work cooperatively with colleagues to resolve internal issues, concerns, or disagreements.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledges and Abilities:

General knowledge of administrative survey principles and techniques and skill in their application; general knowledge of principles of organization and management; thorough knowledge of the subject area of the assignment; working knowledge of statistical methods. Ability to relate the overall objectives and policies of the Trustees, the Office of the Chancellor and the administration and faculties of the campus to analytical and research studies; ability to see the interrelationships within and among the various educational, administrative and fiscal programs on the campuses; sensitivity to the special needs of various campuses because of different size, location, characteristics and circumstances; ability to approach problems objectively; ability to present findings and recommendations clearly and diplomatically and to reconcile, to the extent possible, various divergent points of view; ability to utilize complex statistical and other types of research methods; ability to draw conclusions and develop recommendations, to prepare written reports, and to develop and level contacts including the leading of meetings and negotiations

Experience:

Four years of progressively responsible administrative, technical, or professional analytical experience which demonstrates ability to conduct substantive surveys and studies of problems and issues in assigned areas.

The rank of Associate Professor or higher in a four-year college or university and demonstrated experience in research or special study work may be substituted for the four years of experience.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of and experience with:

• San Francisco Estuary tidal marshlands and/or tidal aquatic natural resources and the physical, biological and chemical processes affecting their ecological functions and ecosystem services
• State and federal funding programs relevant to advancing the mission of the NERR
• Nature-based strategies in coastal adaptation
• Local, regional, state, and federal multi-party regional planning efforts centered around issues of natural resources stewardship, management, conversation, restoration, and climate adaptation
• Regulatory and resource management guidance documents
• Principles of tidal marsh hydrology, geomorphology, ecology
• Principles of aquatic ecology
• Principles of remote sensing

Skills:

• Science communication through graphic, written and oral representation of scientific information to a variety of audience skill levels
• GIS and remote sensing data acquisition and application and cartography
• Topographic surveying with Global Positioning Systems and optical and laser levels and total stations
• Data management, organization, quality assurance/quality control procedures, data reporting
• Data analytical and statistical tools such as R, database software, Excel
• Web and social media technical application and content development including SFSU web sites, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Mailchimp, Constant Contact Education
• Masters or PhD degree in the environmental sciences broadly defined
• Graduate study focus on San Francisco Estuary (preferred) or other estuaries

Environmental/Physical/Special

Must possess a valid California Driver's License. Position requires the use of state vehicle to attend events and visit off campus locations during work hours. First Aid/CPR required before participating in field work, training provided.

Irregular work schedule with weekend and/or work required for special events. Work outdoors in coastal environments. Ability to traverse uneven terrain, marsh walks, beaches and trails, move furniture and other heavy objects and gear to set up and clean-up workshop spaces, with assistance.
