Position Summary Information

Department Description

The UNC School of Law has a threefold mission: (1) the provision of quality education to enable students to practice competently in any jurisdiction of the nation; (2) the accomplishment of scholarly research by members of the faculty to enhance the prestige of the university and the law school; (3) and the service to the legal profession, the state of North Carolina, and the entire nation through involvement in professional activities. Within the School of Law, the Office of Legal Education is charged with supporting this mission through the continued education of law alumni and other legal practitioners from North Carolina and the nation by providing continuing legal education (CLE) programs that are relevant, timely, and anticipate the changing needs of constituents and alumni. Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) is a requirement in North Carolina, as it is in 40 of the 50 states. A lawyer practicing in North Carolina must acquire 12 continuing legal education credits per year in order to maintain his/her license.

Position Description

This position plays a key role in helping deliver programs and events that help the School of Law meet its mission of service to the state of North Carolina and the legal profession. The primary purpose of the position is to assist the Director of Continuing Legal Education and Special Events in the planning, promotion and implementation of a variety of seminars, conferences, programs and special events sponsored by the UNC School of Law. In this capacity, this position is responsible for a wide range of operational, logistical and marketing communications tasks, including but not limited to: attendee and presenter registration; onsite program support; vendor management, program evaluation and MCLE reporting; event marketing; and web and social media management. The individual serving in this role must be comfortable in professional event settings and taking the lead in providing superior customer service to program attendees and presenters. S/he needs to maintain positive and supportive working relationships with University staff, faculty and administrators, as well as work collaboratively with venue staff and vendors to ensure successful implementation of law school conference and special events. The individual in this role is expected to manage multiple responsibilities concurrently, work effectively in a team environment and organize his or her work independently with minimal direct supervision.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate the following skills, abilities and/or attributes:
- A solid educational and/or experience in event management, communications or marketing.
- Organized and self-motivated, with the ability to multi-task, successfully manage time, meet deadlines and prioritize tasks.
- Experience coordinating large-scale events and performing key tasks such as: event promotion, dynamic event registration, customer communications, travel arrangements, site planning and set up, audio-visual coordination, signage, displays, materials organization and distribution, and program evaluations.
- Success working with venues/hotels, caterers, audio-visual contractors, and other event-related vendors.
- Experience planning and promoting events, with specific experience developing web content, print materials, digital marketing campaigns, email communications, and social media campaigns.
- High degree of comfort working with technology, databases and software programs, especially conference and event management software.
- An ability to effectively problem solve and work effectively under pressure as both part of a team as well as independently.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Excellent written and verbal skills and ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
- Excellent project management skills.
- A strong customer service orientation.
- The ability to prioritize workloads and work under deadline pressure.
- A willingness to pitch in and collaborate with a “no job is too small” attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will offer one or more of the following:
- Certified Meeting Planner (C.M.P.) or Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP)
- Experience with Cvent or other conference/event management software programs.
- Experience with continuing educational programs in a university setting and/or reporting responsibility for MCLE or CPE.
- A general knowledge of the law and the legal profession.

The Office of CLE is a fast-paced environment where multi-tasking skills are required. The individual performing this job must be able to work under deadline pressure and manage multi-focused priorities and projects throughout the year. Ability to move 25 to 50 lbs
