Position Highlights The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer through patient care, research, and education. The UACC is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center headquartered in the state of Arizona, dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer through patient care, research, and education.

The UACC is recruiting ambitious individuals who want to work in a fast-paced and competitive environment to apply computational techniques to rapidly accelerate the pace of cancer research. The successful candidate will display excellent technical skills and will develop innovative computational analyses to answer important biological questions. The position will be part of an interdisciplinary Bioinformatics Working Group that links the efforts of multiple campus initiatives (UA Personalized Defense Initiative and Immune Monitoring Facility, UA Data Science Institute and AI Institute, CyVerse, Steele Children’s Center Microbiome Research group, Center for Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistics, etc). The main responsibility of this position is to design, implement, and develop bioinformatics analysis strategies for cancer researchers, with a focus on, but not limited to, using single-cell multi-omics and next-generation sequencing data to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer and identify therapeutic vulnerabilities. Additionally, the successful candidate will collaborate with biomedical researchers and computational scientists at the University of Arizona to drive innovation in cancer genomics.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Analyze data from various databases and sources, performs statistical and/or mathematical programming, and develop reports and visual representations.
  • Work independently to analyze data, developing software tools, and analytical pipelines where necessary.
  • Design innovative data analysis plans for addressing complex questions in cancer and estimate time to completion.
  • Meet with researchers and clinicians to provide bioinformatics consultation in the analysis of experimentally generated and/or publicly available datasets.
  • Communicate with researchers and clinicians to understand and obtain data analysis specification.
  • Collaborate with Cancer Center investigators to write and edit substantial sections of papers and grants.
  • Provide publication quality results and documentation at the end of each project.
  • Evaluate, develop, and support new bioinformatics methods.
  • Collaborate closely with AI institute, Math/CS/Engineering teams to refine and implement novel algorithms.
  • Lead bioinformatics workshops and help create interactive web applications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise with analysis of bulk and single-cell transcriptomic data.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills are essential, as are the abilities to work both independently and collaboratively, to meet deadlines, and to generate creative and innovative approaches to solve complex problems.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
Preferred Qualifications* Ph.D. in bioinformatics/computational biology, computer science, statistics, biostatistics, life sciences or related field, or equivalent experience.
* Proficiency in programming (preferably R, Python, and shell scripting).
* Experience with publicly available genomics data (e.g. TCGA, ICGC, GDSC, ENCODE).
