Position Summary
Serves as the computer and systems manager for the Department of Physics. Responsible for the technical design, planning, implementation, performance tuning, and recovery procedures for research storage, servers and clusters.


Job Description

Ability to move to on and off-campus locations as needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide server support and management for department and faculty research groups. Design, quote, order, install, configure, troubleshoot and provide maintenance of system hardware, software, and components. Ensure systems conform with IT security requirements. Interact with faculty to develop requirements for new/replacement systems. Develop technical solutions that are thorough and consistent with the department of physics’ objectives in response to a wide range of technical issues.
  • Provide technical assistance. Answer questions or resolve computer problems for faculty and staff in person, via telephone, email, or from a remote location. Provide assistance concerning the use of computer hardware and software, including, but not limited to, printing, system and software installation, wireless, network, email, and operating systems. Install and perform repairs to hardware/software and peripheral equipment.
  • Act as an interface between department users and WashU IT and A&S Computing. Respond to campus security notifications. Keep abreast of current trends in server and network development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in a scientific research environment.
  • 4+ years of networking and system experience.
  • Higher education experience.
  • Team Skills: Communicates effectively and frequently both verbally and in writing with other members of the team. Collaborates with other teammates to provide assistance, and expertise, as well as to receive expert input and assistance from others to deliver the best solution and experience for the customer.
  • Customer Service: Must possess an aptitude for patience, professionalism, tactfulness and empathy. Must be enthusiastic and committed to helping others and exhibit the ability to quickly assess the specific needs of the customer to determine an appropriate course of action. Must be able to quickly defuse stressful or anxious situations.  
  • Experience providing system administration functions and supporting all standard Office productivity applications and computing platforms in an enterprise environment.
  • Ability to understand, be accountable for, and complete assigned tasks associated with projects. Ability to prioritize workload to appropriately respond to customer needs and demands.
  • Strong customer service skills.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three years of related experience.

Salary Range
$62,000.00 - $106,000.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
