The Information Technology (IT)Department invites applications for a Computer Support Specialist I to beresponsible for providing day to day technical support and service to UM students, staff, and faculty.  This support is primarily for UM provided hardware, software and systems, though minimal support may be provided to end-user's personal devices to aid them in using UM systems, such as the learning management system, Moodle.

This position will also be responsible for provisioning and deploying new hardware to end-users and decommissioning old hardware before sending to Facility Services as e-waste. 


Required Skills
  • Daily use of trouble ticketing system use to follow up and follow through on tech support issues
  • Provisioning and deploying computers to staff or faculty
  • Helping staff, students and faculty that come to our help desk during walk-in hours or via appointment
  • Troubleshooting both hardware and software related issues
  • Fielding learning management system support questions

Minimum Required Experience
  • Associate’s degree in a relevant information technology field or equivalent education and experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in educational technology, information technology, or a related field
  • At least two (2) years of experience of technical support
  • Ability to understand clients’ requirements and goals and translate those into functional business solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and implement new technologies
  • Ability to Self-educate to improve knowledge of the technology, systems, procedures, and policies of UM IT in order to provide excellent support
  • Experience as an escalation point above base-level tech support

About the IT Department

UM IT is led by a Chief Information Officer and organized into four major units of service delivery in support of this mission:

  • Enterprise Technology (ET), responsible for application/web development, enterprise cloud information systems, database administration, enterprise project management, and ERP administration for Student, Finance and Human Resource systems.
  • Cyberinfrastructure, responsible for IT facilities, datacenters/servers, classroom technology, central authentication, directory/email services, campus network infrastructure, telephone system and UM's network connectivity across Montana.
  • Client Experience, responsible for a variety of client support services including support services, UM IT Helpdesk, PC/Desktop/Laptop provisioning, software licensing, classroom technology support and computer lab management.
  • Information Security, responsible for information security policies and procedures, security awareness.

Position Detail

Work Schedule:          Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week),

     Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary:                          $20.65/hr

Union Affiliation:         FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period:  Six months minimum
