General Statement
The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Montana State University invites applications for a full-time position with primary responsibilities processing carbon fiber materials and manufacturing carbon fiber parts.
The Engineering Technician will be an integral part of a development team creating an innovative form of carbon fiber. Primary duties include preparing carbon fiber materials, manufacturing carbon fiber parts, and performing tests on samples and prototypes.
Successful candidate will not only be an excellent team member but also be a reliable, independent worker.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Apply composites manufacturing experience to create developmental carbon fiber parts.
  • Manufacture development prototypes and samples.
  • Run carbon fiber processing machines.
  • Measure, cut, and assemble carbon fiber materials.
  • Operate oven and autoclave.
  • Monitor and document manufacturing processes.
  • Perform tests on research samples.
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in manufacturing/laying up of composite parts using prepreg material and making/troubleshooting vacuum bags.
  • Relevant knowledge of aerospace standard practices such as material handling, procedure requirements, and clean room facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience using mechanical tools and cutting equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience using measuring equipment including calipers, scale, gauges, and rulers.
  • Basic math and computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • A manufacturing technology degree or certificate or equivalent degree.
  • Previous experience running, programming, and troubleshooting an autoclave.
  • Demonstrated experience writing work instructions and/or scientific reports.
  • 3D printing experience.
  • Competent with SolidWorks or other CAD program.
  • Composite tooling development experience.
  • The Successful Candidate Will
    • Have a manufacturing background familiar with composite manufacturing fundamentals.
    • Follow composite manufacturing best practices including keeping a clean work area, monitoring processes, collecting notes and data, etc.
    • Rely on experience to contribute creative solutions to manufacturing challenges.
    • Must be flexible and willing to take on varied tasks.
    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with diverse team members.
    • Good written communication skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail.
