Job Summary:

The successful applicant for this position will assist in the management of the compliance program for the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC), which houses a nonhuman primate (NHP) colony of approximately 1600 individual animals of three species in four separate facilities. In addition to compliance, other components of the program include colony records, occupational health & safety, and training.
Under the direction of the WNPRC Attending Veterinarian and Associate Director of the Animal Services Division (ASD), the successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring that WNPRC facilities are maintained in accordance with regulations and that faculty, staff, and trainees perform their functions according to animal research standards set forth in multiple regulatory documents (e.g., the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, United States Department of Agriculture [USDA] Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee [IACUC] policies and IACUC approved protocols, WNPRC Standard Operating Procedures [SOPs], etc.). The WNPRC is accredited by the Association for the AAALAC International. The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting with maintaining accreditation of the WNPRC by ensuring the Center meets and/or exceeds requirements established by AAALAC.
Working closely with their supervisor, the Compliance Manager will oversee the occupational health & safety program to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for all employees and ensure the WNPRC maintains compliance with all relevant policies and regulations. The Compliance Manager will apply an understanding of research regulations and guidelines to oversee the training related to animal care and use for WNPRC investigators and staff. Additionally, the successful applicant will oversee the colony records staff to ensure animal health records are maintained accurately.


Responsibilities:
Develops polices in a specific compliance area, and creates, distributes, and maintains compliance documentation and training programs to ensure compliance with policies and/or laws and regulations.
  • 15% Develops and implements new and revised operational policies and procedures relating to specific compliance laws or regulations
  • 10% Creates and delivers educational materials and trainings to target populations and entities
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 35% Creates, disseminates, and maintains required reports and notices in accordance with established laws and regulations
  • 30% Serves as the subject matter expert and a main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
BA/BS in biological sciences, health sciences, or related field required. BA/BS in business administration with relevant coursework in research compliance considered.


Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of four years' demonstrated experience working in compliance within a laboratory animal research environment. The qualified candidate will also possess extensive experience performing animal husbandry and/or biomedical research support, preferably with nonhuman primates.
This position requires detailed knowledge of research procedures and animal welfare regulations. A significant degree of organization and consummate attention to details are necessary. Additionally, this individual must interact with a diverse range of individuals, including faculty, research support staff, animal and veterinary care staff, institutional officials, etc., and must have strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills. Previous supervisory or teaching/training experience needed. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated history of initiative, flexibility, and personal accountability, as well as commitment to the maintenance of confidentiality and the ability to act with discretion. Qualified candidates must be proficient with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and must have experience working with online databases and database management tools. Experience working in a federal or state regulated environment would be beneficial. Since this position supports the WNPRC animal program, animal contact will occur.

Additional Information:

Applicant must be comfortable working with nonhuman primates, infectious diseases, and chemicals/medications in a medical research setting, and wearing various required personal protective equipment (PPE).
-Must be TB negative.
-Applicant will be required to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, applicant may need to be immunized.
-Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication.
-This is considered an essential position and, as such, applicants must be willing to fulfill the duties of the position.
-Employees are expected to act in the best interest of the University and to protect the University from both actual conflicts of interest and the appearance of conflicts of interest.
-Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.
-A one-year period of evaluation will be required.
