Departmental Overview
The Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA) is the portal for industry access to Berkeley, both for research relationships and access to Berkeley technology. The Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) and the Industry Alliances Office (IAO) are peer divisions within IPIRA. The OTL manages and licenses patent and copyrights to the private sector for commercial development, is responsible for material transfer agreements for transfers from Berkeley, supports entrepreneurial activities including start-up company formation, maintains relationships with sources of private capital and service provides, provides litigation support, advises the IAO on intellectual property terms in research and other contracts, and advises the campus on intellectual property innovation and entrepreneurship.
The IAO is responsible for a wide range of research relationships with industry, including industry-sponsored research agreements, collaboration agreements, membership agreements such as for industrial consortia, and incoming material transfer agreements.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Business Operations & Compliance Director with managing licensee due diligence and reporting requirements of a high volume of intellectual property and copyright license agreements to ensure compliance with the terms of the agreement.
  • Assists with monitoring and analyzing due diligence reports monthly and makes recommendations to Business Operations & Compliance Director and Licensing Officers to resolve outstanding issues.
  • Ensures receipt of licensee progress reports, interprets results, and enters the data into the Patent Tracking System.
  • Under general supervision, drafts amendments pertaining to licensee diligence and financial compliance matters.
  • Interprets research agreement terms and meets sponsor IP reporting obligations.
  • Assists Business Operations & Compliance Director in managing the financial terms of a high volume of patent and copyright agreements, most involving significant complexity, tracking license issue fees, maintenance fees, minimum royalties, earned royalties, milestone payments, and patent cost reimbursements.
  • Assists in monitoring the entry of all financial data in the Patent Tracking System.
  • Under general supervision, interprets financial terms of license agreements and creates summaries to be sent to the UCOP accounting group for all license agreements and amendments.
  • Prepares financial journals transferring receipts (fees, royalties, patent cost reimbursements) to UCOP accounting and UCB expense transfer journals for Financial Manager approval.
  • Assists with the reconciliation of general ledger accounts for the OTL, IAO and IPIRA.
  • Assists with ensuring that financial processing functions which may include Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Cashiering are performed with accuracy and that daily operations run smoothly.
  • Serves as backup to purchase supplies, equipment, conference registrations, and memberships.
  • Serves as backup for processing of CPI invoices.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience with interpreting contract and license agreement terms.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, analytical skills, service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, attention to detail, ability to multi-task in a high-volume environment, organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment, and decision-making.
  • Working knowledge of financial processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of financial data management, contract management, and reporting systems.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and common desktop/web applications.
  • Knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; planning; accounting, payroll, and purchasing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of patent prosecution, patent maintenance, and patent law.
  • Skills to provide coaching and mentoring to support staff.
  • Knowledge of campus processes, protocols, and procedures with a focus on budget, account, and fund management.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $33.52 to $40.71.
  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
  • This is position is eligible for at least 50% remote capability. Percentage is negotiable.
