Complex Scattering Beamline Scientist

Updated: about 1 year ago
Location: Upton, NEW YORK
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II), a DOE-funded scientific user facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory, is seeking exceptional candidates for a beamline scientist position within the Complex Scattering Program at NSLS-II to support operations and perform research at the Complex Materials Scattering (CMS) beamline. Based on a three-pole- wiggler source, the CMS beamline facilitates efficient exploration of complex materials in vast material parameter spaces by providing high-throughput and streamlined (GI)SAXS/WAXS capabilities and by developing multiple in situ capabilities. The beamline is also a test bed for autonomous experimentation methods to explore large parameter spaces by using x-ray scattering. The CMS beamline enable state-of-the-art research for user communities with wide research interests covering both soft and hard materials and a variety of applications, including polymeric and nano-composite materials, novel nanomaterials, liquid crystals, biomolecular materials, materials for energy conversion and storage, and in-situ studies during advanced manufacturing processes and mechanical testing.

Position Description

Working together with beamline scientists, data analysis scientists, beamline technicians and engineers, and other support staff, the successful candidate will support the user program and beamline operations at the CMS beamline. The candidate will also collaborate with NSLS-II staff, BNL scientists, and/or external researchers to develop an independent scientific or technical research and development program, such as instrumentation or methodology development, which leverages or enhances the capabilities of the CMS beamline.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the CMS beamline: beamline development, operations, maintenance and troubleshooting, and high-volume user program;
  • Development of an independent research program and technical capabilities/methodologies. This may benefit from internal and external scientific collaborations that leverage the unique capabilities of the beamline;
  • Interact with the scientific user community and work with the Complex Scattering Program staff to help grow user programs for x-ray scattering and execute technical developments needed to facilitate the growth.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related field
  • At least two (2) years of postdoctoral or equivalent experience associated with activities at synchrotron x-ray or neutron scattering beamlines
  • Expertise in using small- or wide-angle x-ray scattering techniques, with a relevant publication record.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for programming in Python or similar language.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with grazing-incidence scattering (GISAXS/GIWAXS) and related data reduction and analysis
  • Demonstrated experience with in-situ studies of materials by using x-ray scattering techniques
  • Hands-on experience with the design, installation, and commissioning of advanced scientific instrumentation in a laboratory or at a user facility.
  • Demonstrated experience with operating a synchrotron beamline and providing user support.

 Other Information:
  • The candidate will be placed at the appropriate research staff level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills the candidate brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.
