The University of Michigan has announced the launch of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Complex Particle Systems (COMPASS), a collaborative home for theoretical, experimental, and computational researchers who together are developing a systems-level approach to particle-based matter for world-leading energy-efficient manufacturing. COMPASS is a collaborative venture with the NSF; University of Michigan; Wayne State University; University of Southern California; Chicago State University; North Carolina State University; University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, universities in Africa; and industry, education, and evaluation partners.

The Center for Complex Particle Systems (COMPASS) at the University of Michigan College of Engineering is seeking an experienced, highly organized, and motivated administrative staff member to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the Center Director, this role provides high-level administrative support to the Director and Managing Director and supports COMPASS operations. The ideal candidate is proactive, adaptable, highly professional, and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of relative administrative experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating events, conferences, meetings, workshops, and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines while managing and prioritizing multiple projects in a fast-paced and often changing environment.
  • Demonstrated excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, self-starter, and ability to effectively work with a diverse group of faculty, students, and staff.
  • Proven track record of positive relationship building with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting an organizational culture that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly, professionally, and effectively communicate verbally and in writing with a diverse population of stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in MS Office suite, Google Suite, Zoom, and other office and meeting software applications.

COMPASS is currently offering hybrid work schedules to staff, requiring three days per week on-site, with the remaining time being remote. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change based on the business needs of the hiring department throughout the course of employment.

Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required. This role will have office space in the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC) on the Ann Arbor campus.

This is a 5-year, term-limited position.  Continuation of the position is contingent upon grant funding for another five years.
