Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) is responsible for the care of all vertebrate animals on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) campus. DCM is committed to programs of excellence in veterinary care and laboratory animal management practices for all species used in UNC-CH research endeavors.
A staff of more than 170 professional, technical, and administrative personnel provides quality animal care to a daily population of over 200,000 animals located in 26 animal facilities on and off the UNC campus. Federal funding and foundations sponsor over $1 billion in research on the UNC campus conducted by the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Pharmacy, as well as the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology.
A major responsibility of the Division’s veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and laboratory technicians is the health care and humane use of all animals. The Division’s program is reviewed semi-annually by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and has been accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) since 1973. DCM and the University also meet U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Public Health Service standards and regulations. As laboratory animal specialists they provide a comprehensive program of veterinary care, offer technical advice and assistance, and provide needed laboratory and research core services for teaching and research purposes.
Position Summary
UNC/NCSU Comparative Pathology Program

The UNC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and North Carolina State University (NCSU) College of Veterinary Medicine offer a 3-year UNC/NCSU Comparative Pathology Program (CPP) for specialized training in comparative pathology, biomedical research pathology, and related fields. The CPP goal is to prepare post-DVM/VMD participants for a successful career in experimental pathology while building on the resident’s specific interests in the field. Residents will spend approximately 50% of their time at NCSU and 50% at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Time at NCSU provides core anatomic pathology training in various food, companion, aquatic, equine, avian, and exotic animal species, emphasizing certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. The partnership with UNC builds upon the core experiences to provide an immersive apprenticeship working at an internationally recognized biomedical research institution with scientists from many fields and disciplines. At UNC, CPP residents participate in diagnostic necropsies, biomedical research study support, pathology-based research projects, Comparative Medicine Rounds, and peer and near-peer case discussions with the UNC Laboratory Animal Medicine Veterinary Residents. CPP residents also attend UNC School of Medicine rounds specific to the resident’s research or organ system of interest, national and international conferences and meetings, additional external laboratory animal or comparative pathology rounds, and assist faculty pathologists in teaching undergraduate or graduate-level classes. Affiliated programs and mentoring support are available to pursue a post-residency PhD at NCSU or UNC.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
D.V.M. – Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine or completion of ECFVG certification program (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduate).
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preference given to applicants interested in graduate training leading to a PhD degree, or with previous graduate research training.
