Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Stone Lab, engaged regularly with extension educators, this individual will work cross functionally to plan, coordinate, and promote the program’s education and outreach initiatives to ensure alignment with the Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab mission; develops new and/or updates existing evidence-informed educational lessons to increase Great Lakes literacy of community members of all ages, with an initial focus on Stone Lab’s Lake Erie Science Field Trip program (i.e., Stone Lab’s non-formal education programming for 5th-12th grade students); assists with the development of new or expansion of existing education and outreach programs for visitors of all ages to the island campus and off-island events and classrooms; implements and identifies areas/opportunities for that foster a more diverse, equitable, accessible, and inclusive environment, considering both internal and external guests and community members; represents Stone Lab at meetings and professional conferences (e.g., National Marine Educators Association, Great Lakes Sea Grant meetings), Ohio State University-based campus events, and other events as needed; works with community partners to coordinate and execute education and outreach events that engage the public with hands-on Lake Erie science; oversees the care and handling of Stone Lab’s captive fish and herpetofauna colonies used for outreach and education purposes; develops content and generates reports for all IACUC education and outreach protocols and scientific collection permits; works with Ohio Sea Grant Extension Educators and other Ohio Sea Grant staff (i.e., off-island educators) to contribute to and develop education and outreach grant proposals to increase Great Lakes literacy and bring associated programming to Stone Lab; develops and implements information for tours of Stone Lab facilities and programs; conducts tours of Stone Lab facilities for public and invited guests. In consultation with leadership, trains seasonal staff (i.e., biological field station assistant and student workers); performs other duties as assigned to assist in the operations of Stone Lab, off island educators, and Sea Grant Extension Educators. The person in this position is fully experienced, projects and programs are complex and of large scope, works independently, and receives general guidance on new projects and programs.

Full-time, regular position at or near Stone Laboratory. Position located either at Put-In-Bay, Ohio or within drivable distance to island ferry transport.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in biological sciences, fisheries, wildlife, ecology, environmental science with a focus on science communication, environmental education, or environmental interpretation, or science education; 4 years of combined experience in education, teaching, or outreach. Experience developing program education and outreach materials.

Desired Qualifications: 4-8 years of relevant experience, MS in education, experience caring for and handling herpetofauna and fishes in captivity or in a lab or field research setting, and demonstrated ability to translate organizational needs into diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and accessibility strategies.

Requires successful completion of a background check.
