Community Horticulture Program Coordinator - Liberty, NY

The Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County Horticulture Program Coordinator will provide coordination for the Horticulture Program including garden development and maintenance, education and technical assistance through the Extension Education Center teaching gardens, Horticulture Diagnostic Lab (HDL) and the Soil Laboratory. The work will focus on garden development and maintenance and coordinating and delivering programs to help the general public, youth, and horticulture service industry in areas of horticulture, garden-based learning, and integrated pest management. Responsibilities include cultivating and maintaining teaching gardens, processing diagnostic samples and answering inquiries on the phone, through letters/email, in group workshops, and in person on subjects including food gardening, container gardening, landscaping, lawn care, structural and medically important pests, wildlife, environmental and sustainable issues, forestry and pesticide use and misuse. The position will process and test soil for pH as needed and send out comprehensive soil test reports with recommendations. This person is responsible for vetting or writing articles for various publications, updating factsheets and website information.
This is a part-time, 18.75 hours per week, benefits eligible position.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Equivalent Education (Associate Degree + 2 yrs. transferrable program/functional experience is acceptable) in Horticulture or related field such as plant science, soils, entomology, landscape design or related subjects.
  • Two years’ transferrable program/functional experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional as well as innovative methods.
  • Possession of computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint Presentations.
  • Ability to write press releases/speak/educate stakeholders and the public about the horticulture program.
  • Willingness to learn new tasks and ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to work as a team member with CCE staff, certain Cornell Faculty, cooperating and organizations agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to work with a diversity of people of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks as required.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which include evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs.
  • Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts.
  • Ability to identify and utilize program resources from the organization and the community.
  • Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework or degree in horticulture, plant science, soils, entomology, landscape design or related subjects.
  • Knowledge of vegetable gardening, fruit production, and other edible crops (mushrooms, maple syrup, herbs).
  • Knowledge of plant diseases and problems, invasive species, integrated pest management, tree care, and ecological gardening techniques (rain gardens, xeriscape gardening).
  • Knowledge of plant diagnostic techniques.
  • Knowledge of annual, perennial and woody ornamentals, turf, and interiorscape plants.
  • Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:
Program Delivery - 10%

  • Serve as horticulture, invasive species, and gardening subject matter resource.
  • Apply existing horticulture/gardening knowledge and program materials occasionally to create lesson plans to deliver educational program or use existing lesson plans to address local, regional and statewide programming priorities.
  • Foster acceptance of horticultural best practices based on pre-existing materials from university/ extension research, to address community and individual needs.
  • Interact and communicate with program participants in a variety of ways, including face to face, e-mail, telephone and social media in order to answer questions, facilitate learning and develop and maintain good rapport.
  • Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, and Cornell as part of horticulture, invasive species, and gardening program delivery.
  • Occasionally participate as a team member with other local and /or regional association educators to deliver programs.
  • Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include direct teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, internet, and distance learning to deliver program.
  • Implement horticulture education programs, activities, and schedule, including providing lab sampling services and results to constituents.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction - 5%

  • May provide input to program leaders in planning the delivery of program goals.
  • Assist in proposing unit budget and in allocating unit budget amounts.
  • Assist in developing communication strategies to further the reach of the Horticulture Program.

Management - 5%

  • Assist with budget allocation and management

Coordination/Operation - 75%

  • Prepare and maintain teaching materials and gardens necessary for Horticulture programs applying existing subject matter knowledge.
  • Process Horticulture Diagnostic Lab samples
  • Coordinate horticulture education programs, activities, and schedule.
  • Assist with coordination of marketing and promotion of Horticulture through public relation initiatives and networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational and other organizations.
  • Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as necessary.
  • Submit program-related expense receipts to supervisor for recording.
  • May assist in the coordination of fundraisers, enrollment campaigns, and other extension association activities, as assigned.  
  • Coordinate administrative tasks related to Commercial Horticulture Education events.
  • Provide moderately complex administrative tasks in the implementation of the budget to include, but not limited to assisting with tracking expenditures.

Professional Improvement - 5%

  • In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and Association priorities.
  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required. 
  • Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.
