The Community Health and Engagement Coordinator at the Masonic Cancer Center (MCC) plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the cancer center and communities across Minnesota under the guidance of the Community Outreach and Engagement Manager. This essential position supports high-quality, comprehensive cancer outreach, including navigation and advocacy services, with an emphasis on improving community health education and literacy, promoting health, cancer prevention, screening, and enhancing access to treatment. The Community Health and Engagement Coordinator is responsible for identifying and implementing effective strategies to enhance community cancer education, facilitate community screening initiatives, and ensure connections to necessary services and treatment.
The mission of the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Centerâ™s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) is to reduce the cancer burden in Minnesota by understanding the diverse needs and concerns of our communities and addressing them with relevant knowledge on cancer prevention, treatment, survivorship, and clinical research opportunities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Coordination and Outreach - 60%
●Develop, coordinate, and implement community health programs focused on cancer awareness, prevention, and early detection
●Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, healthcare providers, and public health agencies to extend our outreach efforts
●Organize and participate in community events, health fairs, and workshops to disseminate information and resources on cancer prevention and research opportunities
●Serve as a patient navigator to assist individuals in accessing cancer screening, diagnostic testing, and local support services in the community
●Collect and analyze feedback from the community to inform and improve our outreach programs and services
●Develop and implement new and innovative community engagement programs that provide the community at large with cancer education and information to understand better and connect to research at MCC
●Establish and maintain constructive and engaged working relationships and act as a liaison between MCC and community partners
●Work with COE leadership and MCC faculty to facilitate community partnerships and establish opportunities to create bi-directional communication
●Research and develop deliverable and culturally sensitive programming for underserved populations
●Deliver evidenced-based cancer education and interventions to communities
●Work collaboratively with M Health Fairview Community Advancement team, the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, the Universityâ™s Mobile Health Initiative, and Biopharma Companies to facilitate community screening opportunities and cancer education
●Seek and establish unique opportunities for MCC to engage in cancer screening in the community
●Work with other staff and leadership to ensure that deliverables are met according to agreed-upon expectations
●Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis
Event Coordination - 20%
●Support planning efforts for large-scale public engagement events hosted by the MCC COE team including but not limited to Goldy vs Cancer Days at the Bell Museum, State Fair, and Science Museum
●Support existing programs including but not limited to the Survivorship Program and Fireside Chats
●Event coordination responsibilities include but are not limited to, venue research, budget development, expense tracking, food and beverage, ancillary event management, registration services, team communication, A/V coordination, speaker management, event logistics, branded merchandise, vendor partnership, lead generation and reporting, and post-event analysis
●Effectively connect with vendors to identify cost-saving opportunities
●Work alongside the MCC Marketing and Communications (MarComms) team to creatively promote programs, develop promotional media, flyers, and public service announcements
●Support programs and events across the COE team including, table staffing and registration
Administrative - 15%
●Support the Cancer Health Equity Network (CHEN) administrative tasks
●Maintain complete and accurate event and program reporting documentation
●Create event budgets and track spending
●Ensure feedback on community needs is communicated to appropriate channels
●Maintain methods of outcome measurement and program evaluation tools to inform current and future programs
●Coordinate exhibits/tabling at health fairs and conferences, including maintaining external relationships, staffing the table and/or soliciting for staffing, packing, and managing table display set-up and tear-down
●Support COE team in reporting National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) outcomes and preparation of necessary reports
●Work collaboratively with the Program in Health Disparities Research (PHDR) staff on community engagement cancer initiatives and review Health Disparities Pilot Grants
●Seeks grant and funding opportunities for MCC and COE initiatives
●Complete administrative tasks related to program execution and implementation
●Maintain and update COE brochures and outreach materials with the MCC MarComms team
●Other duties as assigned
Coalition Building & Participation - 5%
●Participate in coalitions and committees in the community that are relevant to the strategic goals of MCC and COE including but not limited to the Asian Pacific Islander Womenâ™s Health Coalition and the Minnesota Cancer Alliance. 
●Seek opportunities to share and connect community partners to MCC-supported community-based participatory grants


The hiring salary range is $50,000-60,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications
●BA/BS and at least 2 years of experience or a combination of related education and experience to equal 6 years
●Minimum 1 year of experience working or volunteering to provide health education to individuals OR a certificate in Community Health Worker (CHW) or Health Education/Communication
●Minimum 1 year of community outreach and engagement experience
●Demonstrated capacity for independent, proactive judgment and problem-solving while working in a collaborative environment as a team member and problem-solver
●Strong verbal and written communication skills, both in-person and online
●Advanced user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint), and/or internet-based collaboration tools such as Google Workspace and Teams
●Strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize and handle a wide range of tasks simultaneously, a focus on details, and a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
●Must have and maintain a valid driverâ™s license and a driving history suitable to drive on University business
●A background check is required for this position including checking driving record
●Ability to occasionally travel in the state and work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
Preferred Qualifications
●A bachelorâ™s degree in human services, social work, public health, health education, nursing or related fields
●Bilingual - proficiency in Somali, Spanish, Hmong, or another language
●Ability to vary schedule/hours worked per week on occasion
●Demonstrated ability to organize and manage health education or outreach projects, with a focus on patient navigation and healthcare access
●Experience working with diverse and immigrant communities
●Experience in using technology for communication, information-gathering, program delivery, and/or reporting
●Experience leading and coordinating evaluation processes and program development
●Strong personal interest in advancing health equity and serving vulnerable communities
●Ability to practice non-judgment while building rapport with marginalized individuals
●Ability to demonstrate a dynamic, forward-looking approach to new systems, standard processes, and innovative techniques
●Experience with marketing and design (using programs like Canva and Mailchimp) and/or managing web content
●Experience and demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining effective and collaborative professional relationships with partners from a variety of backgrounds, communities, and organizations 
●Experience making public presentations and leading group facilitation
