Essential Job Duties
The GenX Exposure Study is an environmental epidemiology study of residents of the Cape Fear River Basin, whose water has been contaminated with per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Research sites include Wilmington, Fayetteville, and Pittsboro, NC. This study has enrolled over 1000 people with plans to follow them for up to 20 years to understand long term health effects.
This position will involve translating the emerging science about PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) for affected communities in North Carolina. The Community Engagement Specialist will translate and disseminate study research for lay audiences, plan and host community-based events and webinars, maintain and manage study website and social media accounts, draft study newsletter and support scientific research activities. The Community Engagement Specialist will work closely with research team members, community-based organizations, study participants, and other stakeholders. They will also work closely with the Community Engagement Cores (CECs) of the Center for Human Health and the Environment and the NC State Superfund Center.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Develop graphics and visual aids to communicate environmental exposure and environmental health information.
  • Develop and deliver webinars or in-person meetings for participants, community partners and other stakeholders (e.g., Community Science Advisory Board), in coordination with other study team members.
  • Disseminate information using online (web, social media) platforms.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships and collaborations with external stakeholders, including community groups, nonprofits, and other researchers.
Other Responsibilities

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelors and two years of community engagement experience; or masters degree with internship experience.
Other Required Qualifications
  • General knowledge of environmental health issues. Knowledge of PFAS or other emerging contaminants is a plus.
  • Experience translating and disseminating scientific research or technical information for lay audiences.
  • Experience communicating with and working with diverse audiences.
  • Social media experience and website management experience.
  • Basic graphic design experience (e.g., Canva).
  • Organizing and facilitating community meetings, webinars, and other events for
  • communities impacted by environmental contamination.
  • Experience managing multiple projects or initiatives at once and the ability to multi-task.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) science.
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus (verbal and written)
  • Working with various community groups
