Essential Job Duties | The GenX Exposure Study is an environmental epidemiology study of residents of the Cape Fear River Basin, whose water has been contaminated with per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Research sites include Wilmington, Fayetteville, and Pittsboro, NC. This study has enrolled over 1000 people with plans to follow them for up to 20 years to understand long term health effects. This position will involve translating the emerging science about PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) for affected communities in North Carolina. The Community Engagement Specialist will translate and disseminate study research for lay audiences, plan and host community-based events and webinars, maintain and manage study website and social media accounts, draft study newsletter and support scientific research activities. The Community Engagement Specialist will work closely with research team members, community-based organizations, study participants, and other stakeholders. They will also work closely with the Community Engagement Cores (CECs) of the Center for Human Health and the Environment and the NC State Superfund Center.
