Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a regular, full-time Community Engagement Coordinator position. This position will plan and implement Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programming; spearhead Department events to build community within and between groups of individuals including undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, staff, and alumni; develop, coordinate, and maintain Department websites and social media; and coordinate events beyond the University that can help to attract and retain a diverse community within the Department. The Chemistry Department is seeking candidates who have the ability to work with multiple stakeholder groups and contribute in meaningful ways to creating an inclusive environment and fully engaged community within the Department and University.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and launch DEI specific program goals, objectives and plans in collaboration with leadership and the Department DEI committee. Implement programming aimed to cultivate a supportive and inclusive community that promotes the success and retention of all members, especially those from groups historically marginalized in STEM. Coordinate with Washington University’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion when appropriate or necessary.
  • Develop and lead innovative co-curricular and professional development experiences for faculty, staff, students, and postdocs (such as multicultural activities, wellness workshops, and retention-focused activities). Organize listening sessions/town hall meetings for all Department stakeholders.
  • Develop a yearly plan for Department participation in national, regional and affinity group conferences. Represent the Chemistry Department at functions, which may include alumni events, recruitment events, and professional conferences. Coordinate outreach efforts at each event, including planning, attendance, booth setup, and follow-up communications with individuals interested in the Department. Recruit additional Chemistry community members to participate in such efforts. Gather information on program outcomes based on demographic statistics as well as qualitative data from students, staff, and faculty.
  • Develop and publish marketing materials for the Department of Chemistry, including the graduate brochure and recruiting posters for graduate and undergraduate study in the Department. Prepare highlights of faculty research and other public relations material. Produce recruiting videos that highlight research groups and high-profile activities, facilities, and capabilities in the Department.
  • Create, manage, and sustain an impactful online presence for the Chemistry Department through the official website and social media. Develop and design social media initiatives to promote the Department. Manage webcasting of Department seminars.
  • Develop, update, and maintain a list of partner schools for student recruitment, and initiate and manage correspondence with these schools. Organize and track recruiting seminar trips by faculty to these schools. Serve as Chemistry department liaison to connect prospective students with key university and department resources.
  • Collaborate with leadership to promote the Department and engage with current and prospective students and alumni. Enhance and maintain alumni tracking and relations programs; develop professional networking opportunities for alumni and students; draft donor thank you letters; develop and sustain relationships and opportunities with community partners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or MS in Chemistry or other Natural or Social Science.
  • Experience in an academic environment and knowledge of academic practices (e.g. graduate program requirements, faculty hiring processes) highly desirable.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and assessing DEI-specific initiatives in an organization.
  • Able to generate goals and objectives, decisively implement strategies, and assess outcomes. 
  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels of organization.  
  • A creative thinker with the ability to work within the academic system while envisioning new approaches to ensure a climate of inclusivity.
  • Knowledge of best practices in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is essential.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and proficiency in basic computer operations using Windows, Excel, Power Point, and Word.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including faculty, students, support staff, alumni, and contacts at other universities.
  • Sensitivity to and ability to navigate group and organizational dynamics.
  • Close attention to detail and the ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Must have the ability to travel and represent the department at various conferences and professional events.


Required Qualifications

Bachelors’ degree with three years related experience or Master’s and one year of related experience.

Salary Range
$47,300.00 - $78,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
