Community Engagement Capacity Building Program Manager

The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) within Stanford Medicine is seeking a Capacity Building Program Manager (Academic Program Professional 1) to be a key OCE team member in the planning and implementation of the day-to-day activities associated with community engagement educational programs and relevant research projects. This position will work under the guidance of OCE’s Associate Director of Community Partnerships and interacts with OCE’s Associate Director for Research and Faculty Director regularly. At OCE, we strive to:
•    foster meaningful academic-community partnerships in the local area by facilitating co-learning training sessions and co-creation of research agenda that meet community priorities and needs
•    develop a cadre of faculty, trainees, students, and community partners equipped with skills to address real-word problems impacting local communities and vulnerable populations throughout and clinical and translational research spectrum; and
•    facilitate the design and implementation of research that promotes population health and health equity.
This role will be primarily responsible for three capacity-building programs that facilitate community-engaged research at Stanford Medicine. First, the Capacity Building Program Manager will lead the ongoing coordination of the Valley Fellowship Program which provides medical students with community-engaged research or service experience.
Second, the Capacity Building Program Manager will be the staff member who oversees OCE’s technical assistance requests and coordinates with other Stanford Medicine leaders in community engagement to respond to requests. This role will take the lead in tracking and analyzing data related to the technical assistance program service and present findings to internal and external audiences. In addition, this role will be expected to give presentations or guest lectures on topics related to community engagement.
Third, the Capacity Building Program Manager will contribute to the development and lead the implementation of the Health Equity Ambassadors program. The Health Equity Ambassadors program is intended to be a capacity-building program focused on applying community engaged research philosophy and methods to advance health equity across 10 counties in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Up to 10 community members will be selected each year to participate in this program. Program participants will gain knowledge and skills in foundational research methods, have numerous opportunities to educate Stanford Medicine researchers on their community’s research priorities and needs, and cultivate long-term research partnerships with the Stanford Medicine community and in the region more generally. The long-term goal of this program is to increase community participation and leadership in Stanford’s clinical and translational research activities.

The candidate would be familiar with the requirements of conducting research involving human participants in a university environment and comfortable with designing, implementing, and evaluating programs and educational activities.  The Capacity Building Program Manager will be expected to be an individual contributor to a wide array of education and research activities. This position is expected to be an outward facing representative of the OCE and will contribute to developing community partnerships as well as maintaining collegial working relationships with other Stanford Medicine colleagues.

Duties include:

•    Oversee and administer research activities by evaluating academic programs, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes.
•    Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.
•    Teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of courses. Create and/or advise in the development of curriculum. Make recommendations for course improvements.
•    Write and edit content for proposals, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities under the general direction of PI. Assist with the development of research grants, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize data for grant support).
•    Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school and develop communications for internal and external constituencies. Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, fundraising, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings.
•    Monitor expenses, budgets, and finances of the program. Make recommendations on funding based on program spend.
•    May oversee and train student workers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
MPH/MS in public health or MEd in adult education preferred.
Community-based research and capacity-development experience.
Three years of professional work experience in public health programs in a coordinating or project management role.
Professional fluency in a language other than English (due to the focus on health equity in the Bay Area, professional level fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, or Mandarin are highly desirable).


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. Program administration and or research experience may be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
•    Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
•    Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

•    Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
•    Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
•    Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
•    Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
•    On-campus mobility.
