Under the direction of the Counseling Services (CS) Director of Multicultural Services, this position serves as a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and has recognized expertise in specific areas; coordinates and develops partnerships with 2 student service units to provide regular consultation and effective case management of student situations. This work requires analysis of unique and complex issues. This Community Counselor position works with Services for International Students and Scholars and the Middle Eastern North African and South Asian Student Resources and provides the following services to these units; Conduct assessments, respond to student needs, and make referrals to campus resources. Conduct outreach to students, faculty and staff about distressed and distressing students and other mental health issues. Provide consultation to students, faculty, and staff. Provide intake evaluation, treatment planning, crisis intervention, case management, and individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, with referrals to others as needed. Contributes expertise to campuswide programs on education, multicultural concerns, and prevention, formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. Functions with a high degree of autonomy and provides supervision and training to Counseling Services trainees in an APA accredited internship and APPIC-member postdoctoral program. This position works closely with the CS Director of Multicultural Services, staff of partner units, and other Community Advising Network (CAN) Community Counselors. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team. Complies with professional requirements of SHCS and UC Davis policies and procedures as well as all State and Federal professional legal requirements.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current CPR certification.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse social, cultural or socio-cultural
  • backgrounds.
  • Experience treating diverse clients using short-term models of individual and group
  • psychotherapy/counseling.
  • Experience assessing and intervening when individuals present in crisis.
  • Experience providing culturally competent services to International and Middle
  • Eastern, North African, and South Asian clients
  • Experience providing consultation.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of socialization, displacement, transition, oppression,
  • internalized oppression and accommodation, and activism as it relates to the emotional well-being of an individual, while attending to the intersections of identity.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a university counseling service with strong student service orientation.
  • Ability to provide supervision to predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees.
  • Knowledge of ethical, legal and university standards and regulations.
  • Ability to conduct program evaluation, analyze results and share findings.

 

Department Description

Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) provides primary care, mental health, acute care, laboratory, pharmacy, optometry, health education and counseling services to registered UC Davis students. SHCS serves approximately 300 patients per day during the school year. The mission is to provide campus health and wellness resources that enable students to successfully achieve their academic goals and life-long wellness. SHCS has approximately 200 staff including managers, senior professionals, professional and support staff, student employees, interns and post doc residents. SHCS is accredited by AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care), IACS (International Association for Counseling Services), and APA (American Psychological Association). SHCS mental health staff are an educationally diverse group of licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, masters-level therapists, and predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees, dedicated to assisting students and enriching the university community by providing individual counseling, group services, educational programs, psychological consultation, workshops, and other types of outreach services. Counseling services are offered at no cost to registered students. Community Counselors are members of the CS’ CAN Program staff, who assist students, including those from under-served populations, in coping with multiple and intersecting areas of wellness. This includes a holistic approach to areas of concern related to personal, social, academic and career choices, family issues, and other stress factors, i.e., financial and work-school balance. Each Community Counselor works closely with the CS Director of Multicultural Services and the other Community Counselors.

Work Environment

  • Work evenings and some weekends.
  • Position subject to credentialing process at Student Health and Counseling Services.
  • Position is subject to pre-placement screening provided by Occupational Health Services. Pre-placement screening will consist of infection control testing that
  • Position requires signing a statement acknowledging requirement to report child abuse (CANRA) and requirement to report suspected abuse of dependent adults and elders.
