Job Summary:

 Summary of Position:

This position will help to tell the extraordinary stories of the Langston University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. She/he will support the development, editing, and production of a variety of internal and external communications; provide editorial support in communicating consistent brand messaging across print and electronic media. She/he will work directly with the various departments in SAAS to research, write, edit, and organize social media posts, press and public relations material, advertising, and marketing collateral. The Staff Writer/Content developer will work to ensure SAAS-wide consistency and collaborates with Langston University Public relations staff to produce high-quality, creative messaging while being a positive and productive member of the team.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Works closely with SAAS Communications Director, SAAS Dean, as well as with Extension, Outreach, Research, and Academic staff and faculty members in the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences to investigate, write, edit, manage, and produce high­ quality, creative content.
Write engaging press releases, stories, blogs, and other publications for the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.
Work with other team members to write and organize social media posts; write, edit, and publish press releases; organize and create press contact lists for news distribution; organize content and write and edit various publications for the LU-SAAS.
Work with the Dean of LU-SAAS to research, prepare and edit other communications, including talking points, remarks, multimedia presentations, correspondence, annual reports, fundraising appeals, and other publications as necessary.
Write a broad range of creative and compelling information and marketing publications for the school including website content and fliers.
Edit specific deliverables and a wide range of internal documents for LU-SAAS.
Work with LU-SAAS leaders across the school & university to develop effective content strategies and creative content.
Collaborate with the university public relations department and design teams to complete assignments effectively, efficiently, and on deadline.
Interview students, stakeholders, programs administrators, etc. for testimonial/ content creation purposes.

Excellent writing communications skills and attention to detail.
Ability to establish and meet appropriate deadlines.
Journalistic ethics and the ability to deal professionally with LU-SAAS and external sources and constituencies.
Excellent time management skills and flexibility in schedule to cover on-campus as well as off-campus events, which may include occasional evenings and weekends.
Ability to handle competing priorities, including competing components of the position.
Ability to keep careful and accurate records, tracking drafts and sources, for example.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively towards common goals.
Detail oriented and able to work independently in a team setting
Writing skills include style, punctuation content, grammar, spelling, syntax, usage, and consistency.
Press release experience necessary; proofreading experience; editing experience.
Passion for online and emerging media.
Computer Skills (Web design experience will be an asset).
Possess a "can-do" spirit of accountability, helpfulness, inclusion, flexibility, desire for continuous improvement, collaboration, and creativity.
Ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders at all levels.
Skilled in developing and maintaining effective working relationships

Education and Experience:

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
Required: Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, marketing communications/ advertising, or a related field. Preferred: MS in any of the areas mentioned above.

At minimum 1-2 years of professional writing experience with an outstanding portfolio.
Demonstrated research and interviewing skills.
Experience using Microsoft Office products.

Working knowledge of ln Design, Photoshop, and  Illustrator. Ability to quickly gain knowledge about the Langston University School of Agriculture & Applied Sciences as well as the 1890 Land Grant Mission and aptitude to develop creative and effective communication strategies and messaging.
