Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Chancellor is vested with complete authority, subject to the direction of the President of the UNC System. The Chancellor is responsible for carrying out policies of two governing boards: the UNC System’s Board of Governors and the University’s Board of Trustees. It is also the responsibility of the Chancellor to make recommendations to the System President regarding academic program development, personnel matters (subject to policies of the Governors and Trustees), and budget development. The Chancellor maintains wide discretion in decision-making with regard to student affairs (subject to policies of the governing boards) and other aspects of the administration of the University, as provided under the General Statutes of North Carolina and the UNC Code. |
Position Summary | Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Staff, the Communications Specialist assists the Chancellor with logistical arrangements for speaking engagements and other public appearances, both on and off campus. The Specialist accompanies the Chancellor to events to provide on-site support and ensure any last-minute issues are handled appropriately. The Communications Specialist also assists with social media postings and contributes in the development of briefings, remarks, personal notes, video scripts, reports, blogs, feature articles, factsheets and web content. In addition, the Specialist will provide general support to the Chancellor’s Office as needed. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Strong organizational ability and attention to detail. Strong written and oral communication skills. Project management, follow-through, and time-management skills with the ability to effectively and efficiently perform multiple tasks and balance competing priorities. Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in general research. Demonstrated ability to turn complex and voluminous data into interesting, understandable and digestible forms for use in a variety of platforms, including social media, articles, correspondence, blogs and websites. Ability to work with and effectively communicate to all levels of University administration. Proven ability to keep information confidential. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Demonstrated communications experience. Strong organizational capabilities and experience in creating operational plans with demonstrated abilities in managing all details of public and private events. Experience writing for mass audiences. Flexible schedule: need to work occasional nights and weekends |
