Position Overview

The Communications Specialist is a valued member of the University Career Center and Office of Academic Programs and Experiential Learning team, utilizing their expertise to coordinate outreach efforts in a variety of media to connect students to networking events, career resources, employment opportunities, courses, and more. This position coordinates outreach efforts to assist students in finding paid part-time jobs and internships that offer important workplace experience while providing financial support to students while they are attending college.

Job Description

Social Media, Marketing and Communication Support (60%)

  • Oversees social media channels, including developing and implementing channel strategies, designing social media content, maintaining social media editorial calendar, and managing postings
  • Generates ideas, writes and edits content for print and digital materials and distribute materials related to the UCC/APEL events, programs & services, UNIV 101, and First-Year Seminars and career courses.
  • Publicize events, programs, courses, and services internally and externally through various mediums
  • Manages email campaigns through Symplicity, the career management system
  • Develops marketing campaigns, materials, and strategies to promote the job, location, and development (JLD) part-time job program to students and employers
  • Develop copy for marketing projects to strengthen marketing message of UCC and APEL
  • Tracks and analyzes metrics and monitors social media trends and best practices in order to develop strategies to improve social media engagement and reach target audiences.

Administration (25%)
  • Coordinates marketing interns schedules and projects and provides training to interns
  • Liaises with UCC, APEL, Academic Success, and other KU colleagues to ensure they have the marketing materials and resources necessary to promote programs and services to faculty, staff, students, parents, and employers
  • Provides feedback and guidance to interns, career coaches, instructors, and staff to ensure consistency in the marketing and communications message
  • Leads marketing team meetings and other committee meetings as assigned
  • Assist in the design, development, and execution of a communications and marketing plan for the UCC and APEL offices
  • Assists in the collection of job, location, and development program data and evaluates the effectiveness of marketing campaigns associated with the program
Event Support (10%)
  • Place advertising, contact media and campus partners, and lend support at events and public relations activities hosted by the UCC and APEL.
  • Assist with taking photographs and/or video or arranging for contract or KU Marketing Communications photographers as might be required for events and activities.
  • Updates and manages event content on the website.
  • Serves on the UCC events team committee
Miscellaneous (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director

Position Requirements

This position is required to work on site.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing or relevant field at time of appointment.
  • At least one year of marketing or communications experience as demonstrated by application materials.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by applications materials and interview.
  • Experience using Microsoft  PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong computer skills, preferably with experience with Adobe Creative Suite, web content management systems, and social media platforms.
  • Graphic design experience. 
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, as demonstrated by application materials and interview process. 
  • Experience working collaboratively with diverse populations. 
  • Prior work experience that required multi-tasking and managing projects on a tight deadline.
