Job Summary

The role of Communications Specialist is multifaceted and requires a broad set of skills, including the ability to multitask and streamline communication operations effectively. Responsibilities include developing and executing a communications plan for both the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center(SCLC) and the Center for Tobacco Research and Education (CTCRE) that maximizes internal and external communications for these two prominent UCSF tobacco programs and their collective expertise. Must have strong analytical, creative, and diverse writing skills.  Involves conceiving, researching, writing, editing, and publishing written materials and strategic communications for multiple channels. Ensures alignment of communication strategies across all channels to reflect SCLC and CTCRE business goals and objectives.

Responsible for authoring content, as well as editing and proofreading staff- contributed content to ensure accuracy and consistency in editorial style. As main website administrator, the communication specialist will provide direct content editing, and manage the website contractor to administer and manage permissions and add new functions to the website.

Must have the ability to take initiative and provide solutions and clarity on projects. Works closely with both CTCRE and SCLC Center’s leadership to ensure the team achieves and maintains project goals and results and identify and enhance points of synergy between the Centers. Requires excellent relationship building skills, and a team player who can also work independently. While many aspects of the position overlap across the 2 Centers, there are some unique communications needs for each center. The candidate must be able to navigate the common communication needs and the unique need of each center.

Department Description

The Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) within the Department of Medicine (DOM) has a wide range of clinical, research, and teaching responsibilities. DGIM’s mission is to provide high quality and accessible clinical care, medical teaching to physicians in training, and to conduct cutting-edge research in the aspects of health outcomes related to socioeconomic and ethnic factors. The Division has over 75 faculty and more than six independent research groups or programs.

The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC), an independent program within DGIM, aims to eliminate disparities in commercial tobacco use and increase the number of providers who help individuals quit. The SCLC drives health systems transformation to promote cessation in disproportionately impacted populations through providing technical assistance, organizing leadership summits, and producing national webinars for education. Established in 2003, the SCLC is a nationally recognized program office of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Employee will work under the supervision of Catherine Bonniot, SCLC Executive Director for all duties related to the SCLC.

The Center for Tobacco Research and Education (CTCRE), serves as a focal point for a broad range of research, education, and public service activities for over 70 faculty in 15 departments and all four schools at UCSF. The CTCRE performs cutting edge research that is critical for policies and programs to end the tobacco epidemic and represents the leading scientific voice speaking against those who seek to enrich themselves and undermine science at the expense of human lives. 

Employee will work under the supervision of CTCRE Administrative Director for all duties related to the CTCRE.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area three or more years or relevant experience and /or equivalent experience and training.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in communication including interpersonal communication, active listening, and political acumen skills for communication with diverse audiences. Strong writing skill including grammar, syntax, style and punctuation and knowledge or various venues, applications, mediums, etc.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude.
  • Self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to management.
  • Strong knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines and of computer applications requirements for publishing.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media.
  • Confident communicator and presenter.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
  • Strong strategic planning and project management skills.
  • Strong skill to ensure production of high-quality work within budget and time constraints.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Drupal, Constant contact, MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related area.
  • Experience working in tobacco control or public health program or organization.
  • Knowledge of the locations, including their achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of MyAccess applications (BearBuy, MyExpense, Connexxus, Weblinks, etc.).
  • Knowledge of design applications (Adobe suite, InDesign etc.).
