Communications Specialist - School of Computer Science

This full-time position in the School of Computer Science (SCS) Dean’s Office is on the SCS Marketing & Communications team and reports to the director of communications. The Communications Specialist is involved with a broad portfolio of communications projects with front-line responsibility for many, while also providing back-up support as needed for the director and two associate directors with publication production management, content development and news story publishing on the SCS News & Info web page, and postings on SCS social media platforms. Additional skills in photography, illustration for editorial support and/or video editing and production are a plus.
Along with a strong client-service and outcomes-driven sensibility, exemplary storytelling, design and visual communication skills are required. An ability to write in a range of styles including science/technical and human interest is required.

Developing content – The ideal candidate is part of the editorial team and is capable of writing, copyediting and publishing printed and digital communications including web stories and social media postings that showcase the research and people of SCS. To achieve this, interacting with faculty, students and staff is required. The ability to balance priorities of constituents to develop effective and timely communication is key.

Writing and editing – This position requires attention to detail and must be able to represent and understand a targeted audience’s needs and point of view. Must be adept with AP style and comfortable with deadlines, embrace writing about advanced and technical subject matter, serve as a copy editor as needed, and work quickly – both independently and as part of the team

Producing – The person in this position may be called upon to compile, edit and distribute e-comms to key audiences. This requires an ability to succinctly summarize complex content, understand HTML, be familiar with third-party emailing programs such as MailChimp, manage mailing lists and monitor analytics. The incumbent may be called upon to generate web instances or pages in the CMS, requiring a basic understanding of design principles, accessibility and user experience.

Managing projects – This position will be part of project teams that implement communication programs from concept to completion. Balancing multiple projects with varying deadlines and deliverables occurs regularly.

Collaborating – This position works with other communications specialists in SCS departments/academic units, centers and labs; colleagues in the Dean’s Office; the web support team; external vendors; and colleagues within the School and across campus including in the central University Communications & Marketing division.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or similar field required.
  • AP Stylebook proficiency required.
  • Familiarity with Cascade Cloud CMS, MailChimp, Slack and Adobe Creative Cloud is preferred.
