JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Consults with management and staff to design, develop and maintain a website.
  • Develops, writes and edits various communications materials including correspondence, newsletters, brochures and articles.
  • Develops and maintains effective methods for distributing communication materials and information.
  • Maintains required record-keeping and documentation.
  • May train staff in the use of communications technology.
  • May utilize various aspects of social media to accomplish work objectives.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

The Communications Specialist reports to the Director of Communications and will share or assume communications responsibilities in the following areas:

 

General Strategic Communications

  • Assist in communication of strategies and key messages from the Dean and senior leadership, as appropriate.
  • Prepare copy for creative storytelling and appropriately disseminate newsworthy, mission-focused content related to graduate students, graduate faculty, and programs for various audiences through feature stories and student/faculty spotlights.
  • Develop and prepare communications materials and messaging for diverse audiences, which might include blog posts, podcasts, newsletters, articles, press releases, video, one-sheets, collateral, social media and/or print features.

Event-Specific Support

  • Attend LGS events and programs for placement and coverage in digital media and social media.
  • May serve as part of support staff for event, as identified.
  • May determine photography/videography needs and arrangements for events.

Recruitment-Specific Support

  • Work with LGS admissions and recruitment operations staff, and diversity recruitment staff, and graduate schools to update and maintain LGS recruitment collateral material, including brochures, flyers, ads, and other materials in digital and print formats. This may include managing relationships with creative vendors as applicable.
  • Other recruitment responsibilities, as assigned.

Website, Social Media, Email and Newsletter Support

  • Perform general maintenance and timely updates to the LGS website and LGS-maintained distribution lists.
  • Manages Communications Intake/Requests.
  • Work with colleagues in other LGS areas (DEI, Admissions Operations, Student Affairs, Professional Development and Career Planning, and LGS Advancement and Alumni Engagement) to curate and post social media content to existing LGS social media platforms.
  • Create, maintain, and disseminate weekly LGS community digital newsletters, and other bulletins, and correspondence as needed.
  • As requested, prepare reports and analyses on social media engagement.
  • May create graphics, videos, and logos for use in presentations, social media posts, etc.

Other General Support

  • May train and/or work with students on communications activities.
  • Maintains personal and professional growth and development through seminars, webinars, workshops, books, software, publications, and professional affiliations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven track record of creative writing, visual communications, and storytelling experience.
  • Strong collaborator; able to build and maintain relationships both on and off the team.
  • Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, and work with flexibility in a fast-paced environment with dynamic teams.
  • Ability to manage, organize, and prioritize tasks effectively (multi-task).
  • Experience using Canva or other graphic design tools.
  • Experience using email platforms (ex: Contact Monkey)
  • Video editing experience.
  • Excellent writing skills in multiple stylistic registers, suitable for contexts ranging from executive communications to casual social media.
  • Ability to identify the appropriate tone and shape of messaging in accordance with strategic priorities, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work with flexibility and ease across multiple constituencies and satisfy competing demands on messaging.
  • Expertise with social media platforms and systems, and with cross-platform coordination of content. Will need to work in a website and CRM system.
  • Familiarity with IT systems and general understanding of html.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work.  Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
